Using !Space
------------
Note : To run !Space on machines with only a single floppy
disc, it will be necessary to have a floppy to hand with
!System, !Scrap and !Fonts on it. You MUST have the
Trinity.Medium font (that was supplied with your machine)
available for the application to run, and !System must
contain the "Colours" (colourtrans) module. This
should not be necessary for those who have Risc-OS 3.1
though.
Although !Space will use a maximum of around 1120K of
memory, !ARMovie uses very nearly all of the memory in
a 2Mb machine. To allow Replay films to be used with
!Space on 2Mb machines you will require 1400k of memory
to be free before running !Space, which amounts to having
the machine configured to factory defaults. Also, so that
DTP applications etc can be run in conjunction with !Space,
it may (on 2Mb machines) reset itself occasionally to
minimise its memory requirements. This has no effect other
than to close any additional windows that may be open. A
bonus of this is the presence of a system variable
space$position. This is initially unset, but once set
will remember the current page number. If it was desired
to start the application at a particular page, just type
*set space$position <number> at it will start at that page.
(<number> must be between 1 and 544 inclusive).
The following text gives full details of how to use the
application. To obtain interective help when in use, start
the !Help application that was supplied with you computer.
Introduction
------------
The !Space encyclopedia is a fully Risc-OS compliant
application intended as a resource for those interested
in the history of space exploration. It has five windows
associated with it. Each of these windows, and its
function, is detailed below together with details of
associated Menus and/or Panes.
The Main Text Window
--------------------
In this window text is displayed, except at the start of
chapters when a chapter title screen is displayed. As in a
book, the chapter screen indicates the main topic if the
following pages.
To the left of the Main Text Window is a tool pane. This
has five icons that are always present, and three that
are only displayed when required. The order that these
last three icons are displayed in is not fixed, but
usually appear as in the descriptions below. The Main
Text Window has a menu which has entries that invoke
the same actions, but has two additional entries that
are described at the end of the section. The Main Text
Window also has a Control Pane attached at the bottom.
The Control Pane has Forward (at the right) and Back
(left) icons that allow pages to be turned. The middle
two icons display either the title of the current page,
or, at the begining of chapters, a copyright notice.
Starting at the top, the icons perform the following
functions when clicked on:
Browse - This invokes the Browse facility. When the
icon is clicked on, or the Browse menu
entry selected, a menu containing a
list of the major topics available will
be displayed. If one of these entries is
clicked on, the menu will close and the
Browse icon will be highlighted to indicate
that the Browser is On. A dialogue box will
open that gives three options:
No - Clicking this button open the book
at the first page of a list of
pages related to the topic selected.
The Browse icon will be highlighted
and truning the pages will cycle
through list of pages.
Cancel - Switch the Browser Off.
Yes - Clicking this button will open another
menu containing a list of pages that
are related to the topic selected in
the previous menu. In fact, this is
the same list as would be loaded if
the No button had been clicked.
If one of these entries is
selected, that page will be opened but
the Browse icon will not be highlighted
as the Browser will not be On. Clicking
on the Forward and Back icons in the
Control Pane will now turn the pages of
the book as though the browse had never
occured.
Notice that the non-fixed Tool Pane icons
will have changed to reflect the presence
of supporting data, and that the Main Text
Window menu will have shaded entries where
a particular format of data is not
available.
Search - This icon invokes the Search function.
When the icon is clicked on, or the
Search menu entry is selected, a large
dialogue box appears. This dilogue box
has five writeable fields, twelve "logic"
buttons and five control buttons.
The "logic" buttons allow words that are
to be searched for to be related to
each other, i.e. search for "john f kennedy"
by typing "john" into the topmost writable
field, "f" into the next, and so on. If
the search is intended to find those pages
that contain all the words, then the logical
buttons with the "AND" legend should be
pressed. Then, making sure the "Word" button
is pressed, click on the "OK" button and the
Search will be carried out. Alternatively,
a phrase may be typed into top writable icon,
up to 30 characters, the "Phrase" button
pressed, and the phrase will be searched for.
The difference is that a in phrase search
the order of the words is significant.
The "Clear" button will clear all of the
writable fields.
When the OK button has been pressed, a menu
containing a list of those pages that contain
the search words or phrase will appear.
Clicking on an entry will load that page.
While Search remains On, the Forward and Back
icons will cycle through the list of pages.
Where the search word is not in the main page,
but is in the Additional Text, the Additional
Text Window will be opened automatically.
The search words, or phrase, are underlined
while the Search function is active.
To cancel Search, either select another function,
or click on the Search icon, or menu entry, and
then click on the "Cancel" button.
Gallery - This icon invokes the Gallery function. When the
icon is clicked on, the Graphic Window will be
opened, along with the Caption Window, containing
the first picture in the current page. The
function of the Gallery is to allow all the
pictures in the book to be looked at, in
the order that they appear in the pages.
When the first picture is displayed, entries
in the Graphic Window menu can be used to
control the Gallery. These entries are described
later in the description of the Graphic Window.
Chapters- This icon opens a menu containing the chapters
in the book.
Help - This icon opens a dialogue box that shows how
to obtain interctive help.
Movie - This icon invokes the movie player function.
Clicking on the icon will open the Movie Window,
and run a movie. There are two formats of movie,
Repaly and Animations. The control of the two
formats is slightly different.
Replay - Hopefully, the icons and menu entries
asociated with the player window
should be obvious (they are "standard"
Replay). When a Replay movie has ended
or has been stopped, clicking on the
close icon of the Movie Window will
return to the main !Space application.
Animation - Clicking Select anywhere will stop
the movie. A menu can then be
displayed that allows the movie
to be removed, re-started or the
currently displayed frame saved.
There is no way to re-start an
animation from the current position,
it must be re-run from the begining.
This icon only appears when a movie is available.
Picture - This icon opens a window containing the first
picture contained in the current page. The function
of the menu and Control Pane are described later
in the section describing the Grahic Window.
This icon only appears when picture(s) are available.
Text - This icon opens the Additional Text window. The function
of its menu entries are described in the Additional
Text Window section later.
This icon only appears when additional text is available.
The Main Text Window menu has two additional entries:
Fonts - this is the standard font menu. If you are not farmiliar
with this, see the manuals supplied with your system.
Save - This entry has a three entry sub-menu, which is context
sensitive, i.e. only the entries applicable to the
data being displayed are selectable.
Formatted - text is saved (in the system font) formated
as it is on screen. This format is primerily
aimed at those wishing to print the text. To
print the text, just drag the save icon to
a printer icon on the icon bar in the
usual Risc-OS fashion. If the current font
size is set to 14pt or greater, the maximun
width of the text will be 80 characters.
ASCII - text is saved the no format codes (control codes).
This format is primerily aimed at those wishing
to export text to a Desk Top Publishing system or
word processor.
Sprite - This allows the chapter screens to be saved
as sprites.
The Additional Text Window
--------------------------
The second window, which can only be opened when there is
information available, is the Additional Text Window. This
window provides textual background information relating to
the more detailed text in the Main Text Window. As described
earlier, the icon in the Tool Pane, and its corresponding Menu
entry, that open this window are only selectable when appropriate
text is available.
This window has a menu attached to it with the following entries:-
Save - This entry has a two entry sub-menu:
Formatted - text is saved (in the system font) formated
as it is on screen. This format is primerily
aimed at those wishing to print the text. To
print the text, just drag the save icon in the
usual Risc-OS fashion. If the current font
size is set to 14pt or greater, the maximun
width of the text will be 80 characters.
ASCII - text is saved the no format codes (control codes).
This format is primerily aimed at those wishing
to export text to a Desk Top Publishing system or
word processor.
Close - Close the Additional Text Window.
The Graphic Window
------------------
The third window is the Graphic Window. In this window, pictures
contained in the current page are displayed. Directly associated
with this window is the Caption Window, described later. The Graphic
Window menu has the following entries:-
Save - this allows the current picture to be saved in the usual
Risc-OS manner. By dragging the save icon to the printer
icon, it can also be printed.
Speed - This entry is only selectable when the Gallery is On.
It has a three entry sub-menu:
Slow, Fast and Fastest. Clicking on these entries will
vary the speed of the Gallery.
Select - This entry is only selectable when the Gallery is On.
Selecting this entry will open the book at the page that
the current picture belongs to.
Continue - This entry is only selectable when the Gallery is On.
Selecting this entry re-starts the Gallery.
Abandon - Selecting this entry either closes the Graphic Window,
or closes the window and cancels the Gallery.
The Graphic Window Control Pane has four icons. The effect of the
icons depends on wheather the Gallery is On or not.
With Gallery On:
The Forward and Back icons control which way the Gallery is running
through the pages of the book.
The "Caption button" will open the Caption Window if it has been
closed.
The middle right icon will be set to "Gallery".
With Gallery not On:
The Forward and Back icons will move through the list of pictures
in the current page.
The "Caption" button will open the Caption Window if it has been
closed.
The middle right icon will show which picture is being displayed
out of those available.
Controlling Gallery
-------------------
Gallery is slightly quirky in operation. Once the Gallery function
has been invoked, it will open the Graphic Window showing the
current picture in the current page. At this point, the Gallery
will be "paused". To start the Gallery cycling through the
pictures, click Menu and then side off to the right to obtain the
"Speed" sub-menu. Click on a speed, and the gallery will start.
The selected speed will remain set until the men is agian used
to change it. One Gallery is going, moving the mouse pointer so
that it is no longer over either the Graphic Window or Graphic
Caption Window will allow the Gallery to run. To pause the Gallery
move the mouse pointer over either of these two windows. Clicking
Select whilst over the windows will also pause the Gallery. To
start the Gallery going again, eithe move the mouse pointer away
from the windows, click "Continue", or select a speed. Abandoning
the Gallery is acheived by:
Clicking the "close" icon of the Graphic Window,
Selecting the "Abandon" entry from the Graphic Window menu,
Selecting "Select" from the Graphic Window menu,
Selecting another function from the Tool Pane or Main
Window menu or
Turning the page.
The Caption Window.
-------------------
The Caption Window contains the caption for the picture in the
current Graphic Window. It has a menu that allows the text to be
saved in the usual manner.

Please note that the version of !ARPlayer used on this disk
is NOT the same as the standard one, hence it has been renamed
!APPLayer. Do not try to use it like !ARPLayer, it won't
work!
