The Gemini spacecraft was made up of three modules. The two-man crew rode and returned to Earth in the re-entry module, pressurized with pure oxygen at low pressure. The re-entry module had a truncated cone shape and an ablative heat shield, like Mercury. Its nose section was shaped to permit docking with other spacecraft, and it had opening hatches above the seats to permit EVA (spacewalking). Attached to the base was the retro-module, housing the retro-rockets. The equipment module completed the spacecraft. For escape in emergencies, the craft was fitted with ejection seats. It was equipped with braking parachutes and was designed for splashdown at sea.
