  17. \<COLOUR 1> COMMENTS: \<COLOUR 0>  The first two-stage rocket, consisting of a V-2 (first stage), with a WAC Corporal solid rocket (second stage) on top; the first flight, from White Sands, takes place on May 13, 1948; on the fifth flight, on February 24, 1949, the Bumper reaches a record altitude of 393 km; the seventh launch, on July 24, 1950, is the first rocket launch ever at Cape Canaveral, at what is at first called the Long Range Proving Ground; the next and final Bumper launch takes place at the Cape five days later.
