  17. \<COLOUR 1> COMMENTS: \<COLOUR 0>  First successful probe to enter Venus's atmosphere and report on conditions there (Venera 3 entered atmosphere in March 1966, but communications failed); reports a mainly carbon dioxide atmosphere and surface temperatures approaching 500 degrees C and pressures of about 75 atmospheres; Venera 5 and 6 carry out similar mission in 1969; Venera 7 (1970) and 8 (1972) survive to land on surface.
