A reference line in space or drawn through a body. Usually this is a line about which a body has some degree of symmetry, e.g. a line passing through the centre of a sphere or which runs centrally through the length of a cylinder. For an ellipse the major axis is a line passing through the centre and crossing the greatest diameter of the figure.
