One of a class of objects named after BL Lacertae, a highly variable object. Such objects - also known as Lacertids - emit most strongly in the INFRA-RED and are characterized by rapid brightness variations at radio, infra-red and optical wavelengths. They are extra-galactic objects possible related to QUASARS and Seyfert galaxies.
