The velocity at which the hot gases are expelled from the combustion chamber of a ROCKET motor. For a given MASS RATIO, the higher the exhaust velocity, the greater the final velocity of the rocket. Unfortunately, existing chemical rockets achieve exhaust velocities only of the order of 3 km per second. However, ION ROCKETS, it is hoped, will achieve much higher values.
