Series of US lunar orbiting space probes, five of which were launched successfully between 10 August 1966 and August 1967. Their primary objective was to photograph the lunar surface in detail and to assist in the selection of the APOLLO landing sites. In addition, studies of the motion of these spacecraft improved our knowledge of the gravitational field of the MOON and led to the discovery of mascons.
