Series of US geophysical satellites employed to study, for example, the IONOSPHERE, the interplanetary MAGNETIC FIELD, the solar wind, Van Allen Belts, etc. The first of the series, OGO 1 was launched on 5 September 1964 into a highly elliptical orbit (perigee altitude 281 km and apogee altitude 149385 km) typical of the series.
