A rocket motor used to decelerate a space vehicle, in order to change its orbit or to achieve a soft-landing. Such a motor ejects gas ahead of the space vehicle so that the THRUST produced opposes the motion of the vehicle. Manned spacecraft of the Soviet space programme (such as the SOYUZ craft) uses parachutes and retro-rockets to achieve soft-landing on land.
