The Soviet space programme broke free from its military domination in 1985, with the setting up of a civilian space agency called Glavcosmos. This body, working closely with the relevant state departments, is now assuming responsibility for coordinating space activities in science, technology and agriculture. It is also concerned with the commercial exploitation of Soviet space know-how, offering attractive rates in the international marketplace for satellite launches. It also offers space hardware for sale, and even journeys to space station Mir. It shares facilities with the military.
