  18.                                 BATTLECHESS

  20.           Upon  first  seeing BATTLECHESS,  I thought  "Now  here's  a 
  21.      interesting  game with a semi-new twist."  The  name  BattleChess 
  22.      reminded me alot of the old game Archon.   However,  all I had to 
  23.      do is look at the back of the box,  and I knew that this would be 
  24.      a lot different than the old 8-bit game I once enjoyed.

  26.           Picture  -  A dark room.   You stand on top of  a  checkered 
  27.      marble floor.   On the turn before,  you witnessed the carnage of 
  28.      one  of your pawns being beaten to an insignificant pulp  by  the 
  29.      opposing king's rook.   The rook is a remote threat, but you must 
  30.      remain cool.   What do you do??   Do you go on the offensive  and 
  31.      risk being slaughtered by your opponent,  only to have him  laugh 
  32.      in your face afterwards?   Or do you go on the defensive and find 
  33.      out  too  late that it was a bad move,  and your  opponent  still 
  34.      laughs in your face?  (Ha, I say, Not if you are good enough.)

  36.           BATTLECHESS is a good game for any chess buff.   Although  I 
  37.      feel it is not as challenging as some of the other chess programs 
  38.      out  there for the ST,   it still makes a formidable opponent  to 
  39.      play against.   More importantly, however, the REAL reason I (and 
  40.      almost  everyone else) like this game is because of the  graphics 
  41.      and animation.   They are superb!   Welcome to the world of chess 
  42.      pieces  battling in 3D!!!   You can actually see the  queen  sway 
  43.      herself to another square,  and see her kill the knight occupying 
  44.      her space.   Each playing piece on the chessboard has his/her own 
  45.      personality and each has their own style of taking other  pieces.  
  46.      Unlike Archon,  BATTLECHESS plays each piece exactly as if a REAL 
  47.      chess piece.   The attacking piece never gets defeated.  (Watch a 
  48.      knight fight another knight! It's great!)  For any chess fan that 
  49.      appreciates  a lot of good animation,  this is a program to  get.

  51.           One great thing about BATTLECHESS is that you can put it  on 
  52.      your hard drive.   So all those MEGS of animation won't take  too 
  53.      long  to boot in,  as on floppy.  Convenience-wise it's really  a 
  54.      great  feature.   BATTLECHESS  also  features a  quick  and  easy 
  55.      chessboard setup routine that enables you to start your board  in 
  56.      any  sort of fashion.   It also enables you to play  against  the 
  57.      computer  (choosing  whichever side you want to be)  or  you  can 
  58.      choose  to play against another human player.   BATTLECHESS  even 
  59.      has support for modem play.  That's something that is quite nice.  
  60.      There  is a timer function so that you or another  player  cannot 
  61.      take all day trying to make a move.   The game even sports a copy 
  62.      protection scheme where you have to input moves from famous chess 
  63.      games  in order to get into the program.   Although it may  be  a 
  64.      little  tiresome at times,  it's a decent feature so that  people 
  65.      can  make personal copies on hard drive or disk,  and still  make 
  66.      pirates have to take time and to write down all the moves in  the 
  67.      manual.   In all, it's a good chess program from people that have 
  68.      obviously done their homework.

  70.           As I have been saying all along, BATTLECHESS is a great game 
  71.      for any fan who likes chess.  It offers a fair amount of features 
  72.      like  any other chess program,  but above all,  it has  excellent 
  73.      graphics.   (The dropdown menus are sweet.   Two angels holding a 
  74.      scroll  with  your options.)  The only regret I have  about  this 
  75.      program is that even though I love the graphics, after seeing all
  76.      the pieces move and fight over and over,  the game does get a bit 
  77.      monotonous.   But I suppose that is normal,  for as to most games 
  78.      I play,  after taking a short break from it,  it's a joy to  come 
  79.      back and whoop up on someone again. -PL
