- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
- IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible 512K
- Hard drive (recommended)
- Supported Printer
- MS-DOS Version 2.1 or greater
-
- CAPABILITIES OF VOCABULARY POWER:
- Word Search size can be varied from 3 to 36 columns and
- from 3 to 20 rows. The activities can be printed in 10,
- 12, 15, or 17 pitch. The pitch depends on your printer
- capabilities and the selection in the Settings Menu.
- Up to 200 words will be placed automatically in each
- maze. Word search words and vocabulary bingo words can
- be up to 17 characters long. Clues can be up to 100
- characters long. Words and clues can easily be added,
- deleted, printed, randomized, formatted, or changed at
- any time. A variety of activities can be automatically
- created and printed from each list of words and clues.
- This option allows teachers to stress the same vocabulary
- but use different activities with their students. This
- has been a proven effective method for learning
- vocabulary words.
-
- Backups of all files can be made using normal DOS disk
- copying procedures or the Back-Up word list selection of
- the Options Menu.
-
- VOCABULARY POWER (tm) and CROSSWORD POWER (tm) are
- trademarks of WISCO COMPUTING. The computer hardware,
- software, and printer names used in this manual are the
- trade names and/or trademarks of their respective owners.
-
- VOCABULARY POWER combines entertainment and educational
- value. This program can create a variety of activities
- to learn vocabulary. The activities (word searches,
- bingo cards, word jumbles, etc.) can also be created for
- parties, games, and study aids. Businesses and
- consultants have used this program for training sessions,
- internal newsletters, and advertising promotions.
- Restaurants can use these activities for their place
- mats.

- STATUS LINE:
- ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │1 25 Words 1:XMASWORD 2:NONE From Complete List Single│
- └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- The Status Line (the bottom line of the display) provides
- information about the words used in these activities.
- The first number on the Status Line refers to the
- activity number that is displayed. The next number on
- the status line indicates the number of words used in the
- activity.
-
- Following the 1: is the name of the first wordlist. This
- wordlist was selected with the File Menu. This wordlist
- is used with all activities. Following the 2: is the
- name of the second wordlist. This wordlist was selected
- with the File Menu. The second wordlist is only used
- with the word search activities. The second wordlist can
- be removed from the word search by using the selection on
- the File Menu.
-
- Either From Complete List or From Marked Words is
- displayed. Mark words from the Edit Menu allows you to
- control which words from the complete wordlist are used

- the wordlist to be selected for an activity.
-
- Single or Multiple is the last item to be displayed in
- the status line. This setting is made from the
- Environment selection of the Settings Menu. When Single

- for use with CROSSWORD POWER.
-
- The wordlist title will be printed above the activity.
- The title can be revised with the Edit Menu selection.

- vocabulary words and clues by holding the alternate key
- down and entering the 3 digit number on the number pad
- (not the top row of the keyboard) of the IBM keyboard.
-
- The special characters and symbols can be printed in both
- VOCABULARY POWER and CROSSWORD POWER, provided your
- printer supports these characters.
-
- Most printers support international character sets.
- These character sets are the most commonly supported by
- compatible printers. To add to the confusion, different
- manufacturers call the character sets by different names.

- When this menu is displayed, press the letter of your
- choice. The words will be changed, and you will have the
- option of saving the changes.
-
- MANIPULATION HINTS:
- Words can be changed back and forth between capital and
- lower case letters. It is easier to work with all
- capital letters. However, sometimes lower case letters
- are necessary. For example, in chemistry, CO means
- Carbon Monoxide and Co means Cobalt. This program treats
- capital letters and lower case letters as two different
- letters. This means that words will not intersect at a
- common letter if one is a capital letter and the other is
- lower case letter.
-
- Placing the longest words into a word list first does not
- guarantee that more total words will be placed into a

-
- Each time a word list is randomized, the order of the

- GENERAL INFORMATION:
- When an Activity selection is made, and Multiple is
- displayed in the status line, two questions will be
- asked. First you will be asked if you want a teacher
- (answer key) printed with each student form. Then you
- will be asked how many copies of the activity you want
- printed. You can automatically print up to 40 different
- activities (Word Searches, Vocabulary Bingo cards,
- Quizzes, etc.) when this selection is made.
-
- When an Activity selection is made, and Single is
- displayed in the status line, the word list displayed on
- the status line (at the bottom of the screen) is loaded
- into memory. The first activity selected and a PRINT
- ACTIVITY MENU are displayed.
-
- PRINT ACTIVITY MENU:
- The Print Activity Menu is displayed on the screen with
- the following options. You can select the option by
- pressing the first letter of the selection or using the
- mouse and clicking the left mouse button once when the
- mouse cursor is over your selection.
-
- VOCABULARY POWER Page 16
-
- <S>TUDENT ACTIVITY PRINTED:
- This option prints the student activity.
-
- <T>EACHER ACTIVITY PRINTED:
- This option prints the answer key to the activity.
-
- <U>NUSED WORDS DISPLAYED:
- This option allows you to display and print words from
- the wordlist that were not used in this activity.
-
- <A>SCII TEXT FILE SAVED:
- Student or teacher activity is saved as a text file that
- can be imported into most word processors. The following
- pattern is used to name the file:
-
- The first part of the file name uses the same name as the
- word list. The extension part (the three letters after
- the period) varies depending on the activity and if it is
- the teacher or student copy. The first letter of the
- extension will always be V (for VOCABULARY). The last
- letter will either be a S for STUDENT or T for TEACHER.
- The second letter varies with the activity.
-
- The second letter uses the following pattern Word search
- = W, Cryptolist = C, Fill in the Blank = F, Juggle word
- = J, Juggle With Clues = G, Matching Square = S, Multiple
- choice quiz = M, and Matching Quiz = Q For example, the
- file HOMONYMS.VCT uses the HOMONYMS.WL word list. The
- file is (C) Cryptolist of the (T) Teachers activity.
-
- The original word lists use the extension .WL The word
- list files are saved as ASCII files to make it easier to
- check spelling.
-
- <N>EW ACTIVITY DISPLAYED:
- The words are randomized again, then a completely new
- activity is displayed and available for printing.
-
- <L>EAVE THIS MENU:
- This selection is used to return to the regular pull down

-
- BINGO CARD DETAILS:
- Your complete word list must have at least 25 words to
- make bingo cards. If From Marked Words appears in the
- status line, at least 25 words must be selected. If
- Single is displayed on the status line, a bingo card is
- displayed with the PRINT MENU. If Multiple is displayed,
- you can automatically print up to 40 different Vocabulary
- Bingo cards.
-
- Each bingo card fits neatly on a 8 1/2" by 11" piece of
- paper. Environment settings are used to determine if the
- Free Space should be printed on the card, and if the card
- should expand to fit the full page. A Printer Setting
- (line draw characters) determines the type of lines
- surrounding each rectangle of the card. Calling cards
- can be printed by using the Flash Card Selection.
-
- CRYPTOLIST DETAILS:
- The wordlist is randomized before choosing 20 words. If
- your word list has fewer than 20 words, the entire word
- list will be used. Each letter of the vocabulary word
- will be substituted by a different letter.
-
- For example, the word CELERY could have been randomized
- as RXJXWM. The letter R was substituted for the letter
- C in celery. The letter X was substituted for the letter
- E. Since there are two E's in CELERY, there are two X's,
- at the second and fourth positions in the word. All
- words of this activity uses the same letter substitution.
- If the word PLANE was also on this list, the last letter
- would also have to be an X. A grid is printed at the
- bottom of the student paper for help. The substitution
- key is displayed on the screen and printed on the teacher
- key. Additional cryptolists use a different group of 20
- words and a different letter substitution method.
-
- FILL-IN-THE-BLANK DETAILS:
- Word lists are randomized before choosing up to 25 words.
- If the word list has fewer words, the entire word list
- will be used. Clues for these 25 words will be
- randomized and displayed. When long clues are displayed,
- the first part is displayed with a plus (+) sign to
- indicate more letters. Long clues are automatically
- wrapped for proper appearance when printed. A blank line
- is printed in front of the clue number for the student to
- write the vocabulary word.
-
- VOCABULARY POWER Page 18
-
- FLASH CARDS (OR BINGO CALLING CARDS) DETAILS:
- The flash cards used for vocabulary drills can also be
- used as calling cards for vocabulary bingo. When this
- selection is made, a menu listing 6 different options is
- displayed. The calling (flash) cards allow printing the
- words and clues on regular 8 1/2" by 11" paper or 3" by
- 5" cards. The words and clues may be printed on the same
- or opposite sides of the paper. When printed on opposite
- sides of the paper, you will have to turn the paper over
- to print the back side.
-
- Additional menu help is available for test centering the
- paper in the printer.
-
- JUGGLE WORDS DETAILS:
- The word list is randomized before choosing 20 words. If
- your word list has fewer than 20 words, the entire word
- list will be used. The letters of the vocabulary word
- will be randomized. Each additional juggle word activity
- that is displayed and printed uses 20 different words and
- a different letter randomization.
-
- MAGIC SQUARES DETAILS:
- Either 16 (4 x 4) or 25 (5 x 5) words are used for the
- magic squares. The size of the matching square was set
- with Environment. The numbered definition is matched
- with the lettered vocabulary word. The number answers
- are placed in the lettered boxes. When the answers
- (numbers) are correct, all columns, rows, and both
- diagonals will add to the same number. Each additional
- magic square activity displayed will use a different set
- of words and one of the 20 included magic square answer
- keys.

- MATCHING QUIZ DETAILS:
- Word lists are randomized before choosing up to 25 words.
- If the word list has fewer words, the entire word list
- will be used. Clues for these 25 words will be
- randomized and displayed. When long clues are displayed,
- the first part is displayed with a plus (+) sign to
- indicate more letters. Long clues are automatically
- wrapped for proper appearance when printed. A blank is
- printed in front of the word number for the student
- choice. The correct response letter is printed in front
- of the number on the teacher key.
-
- Each additional quiz that is printed uses a different
- group of 25 words and a different random answer pattern.
- Up to 40 different forms can be printed automatically.
- Making different matching quizzes has never been this
- easy.
-
- MULTIPLE CHOICE QUIZ DETAILS:
- The word list is randomized before choosing 25 words. If
- your word list has fewer than 25 words, the entire word
- list will be used. The clues for these 25 words will be
- randomized and displayed. Then conflicting choices
- (wrong answers) will be chosen from all words in the word
- list. Then the correct answer and three conflicting
- answers are randomized. Long clues and long answers are
- automatically wrapped for proper appearance when printed.
- A blank is printed in front of the word number for the
- student choice. The letter of the correct response is
- printed in front of the item number on the teacher key.
- Up to 40 different forms can be printed automatically
- when Multiple is displayed in the status line.
-
- WORD SEARCH DETAILS:
- The Word Search size is selected on the SETTINGS MENU.
- The maze size can be varied from 3 to 36 columns and from
- 3 to 20 rows. The words from a second wordlist can also
- be added to the word search. The second wordlist was
- selected with the File menu and displayed in the status
- line. Up to 200 words will be placed automatically in
- each maze. A random spot is chosen for the first word to
- be placed into the maze. Then other words will attempt
- to intersect the first word. When no more word
- placements can be made, the PRINT MENU is displayed.
- Words can be arranged forwards, backwards, horizontal,
- vertical, and diagonally. Backwards spelled words can be
- eliminated by an Environment selection of the Settings

-
- WORD SEARCH AND ACTIVITY PITCH:
- Select a printer pitch supported by your printer.
- VOCABULARY POWER supports 10, 12, 15, and 17 pitch. Ten
- pitch refers to 10 characters per inch. The larger the
- pitch number, the more characters are printed per inch.
- VOCABULARY POWER automatically sets the point size for
- the LaserJet and DeskJet printers based on the pitch
- setting. Some DeskJet and LaserJet printers require a
- memory cartridge to support 12 pitch printing.
-
- ACTIVITY LINES PER INCH:
- Normal spacing is 6 lines per inch. Changing to 8 lines
- per inch may prevent the activity from printing on more
- than one page.
-
- SET PRINTER TO LETTER QUALITY (BOLD):
- Depending on the printer, the activities may be printed
- in either draft of letter quality mode. Draft mode will
- be used if either this setting is set to NO or font
- number 9 (draft) is chosen for the Epson LQ or IBM
- Proprinter X24E printers.
-
- IGNORE PRINTER STATUS <Yes or No>:
- VOCABULARY POWER checks the status of the parallel
- printer port before sending any data. This normally
- works quite well. However, if you have a non-standard,
- or very fast computer, you may experience problems.
- VOCABULARY POWER might actually think that your printer
- port (LPT1:) is busy when you know it is not. If you
- have printer problems like this, select Y for Yes to
- ignore the printer status.
-
- LPT PRINTER PORT:
- This Number indicates where the selected printer is
- connected to your computer. Most printers are connected
- to port (LPT1:). If you have additional parallel printer
- ports, you may use printer port 2 or 3.
-
- BOX DRAWING CHARACTERS:
- If your printer prints foreign language characters around
- the squares on the BINGO cards, this should be set to NO.
- Then dashes and plus signs will be substituted for the
- BOX characters.
-
- VOCABULARY POWER Page 25
-
- PRINT EXTRA SPACE:
- This setting allows an extra space between the heading
- and body of the activity. If the multiple choice and
- matching quiz prints on two pages, set to NO. Extra
- space can also be included between the Multiple Choice
- questions.
-
- HP LASERJET TYPEFACE NUMBER:
- Typeface refers to the unique design of the characters.
- The following typefaces were included with the LaserJet
- III: 0=LinePrinter, 3=Courier, 5=CG Times, and
- 52=Univers.
-
- SELECTING HP LASERJET AND DESKJET FONTS:
- Internal fonts are fonts built into the printers. Most
- DeskJets and all LaserJets before the LaserJet III had
- only a few Courier and 16.66 (condensed pitch)
- lineprinter internal fonts. This was also true of almost
- all LaserJet compatibles until quite recently. The
- LaserJet III also included a 12 pitch Courier and two
- scalable fonts (CG Times and Univers). The scalable
- fonts can be used with the LaserJet III/4 printer. The
- scalable point size will be determined by the pitch
- selected to print the activity. Soft fonts may be
- transferred (downloaded) to these early model printers
- prior to printing the activities. If your compatible
- printer can not support the PC-8 symbol set, set the box
- drawing selection on the Printer Settings Menu to NO.
-
- EPSONLQ & IBM PROPRINTER X24E FONTS:
- Bold must also be set to YES to print these fonts. The
- following EpsonLQ, IBM Proprinter X24E, and Panasonic KX-
- P2123 fonts are supported:
-
- 0. Roman (10,12,15 pitch)
- 1. Sans Serif (10,12,15 pitch)
- 2. Courier (10,12,15 pitch)
- 3. Prestige (10,12,15 pitch)
