This disk contains 36 windows bitmap images, suitable for use as
wallpaper. These have been reduced to 16 colours. This results in
some loss of image quality, but the advantages are:
1. The files are much smaller, so you get more of them
2. They use a LOT less memory as wallpaper, so Windows runs faster.
3. They look good, even if you only have 16 colour graphics.
To install these files:
1. From DOS, change to your windows main directory, Eg C:
CD \WINDOWS
2. Run the self extracting program on the floppy, called INSTALL.
For example, if this disk is in your A drive, type:
A:\INSTALL
If it's in your B drive, type B:\INSTALL
The files are now installed on your system.
3. To select the new wallpaper:
For full instructions, see your windows documentation.
Quick Guide:
Run the CONTROL PANEL application, then run DESKTOP.
This will show you several options for setting up your desktop, the
one you want is WALLPAPER near the bottom left. If you click on the
downward arrow by the FILE, you can pick one of the image files.
Try EAGLE.BMP for a start.
You will also see several image files provided with Windows in the list,
so if you get a non-space image, you have selected one of these.
The other option to choose with wallpaper is TILE or CENTRE. If you
select CENTRE windows will give you one image in the middle of the
screen. As most of the images are small, you will probably want to select
TILE which repeats the image across your screen.
About the images:
There are a selection of images from Astronomy and Space Exploration here,
taken from the Starbase One BBS collection. These were resized and dithered
down to 16 colours using Paint Shop Pro - an excellent shareware graphics
utility program.
Some personal favorites are:
EAGLE.BMP - The Eagle Nebula, a region of glowing gas.
GEMINI7.BMP - A shot of the early Gemini 7 spacecaft in orbit.
HSTSAT1.BMP - A view of Saturn from the Space Telescope.
LEM.BMP - The Lunar Module from the Apollo missions.
MMU2.BMP - Astronaut above Earth with Manned Manouevering Unit.
NGC2997 - A lovely spiral galaxy.
SHUTUP1.BMP - An image of the shuttle launching
TRIFID.BMP - A view of the Trifid nebula, a region of glowing gas.
WORLD.BMP - A large image of the whole Earth from Orbit.
