Contents of the Starbase One CD Rom:
Introduction:
Welcome to the Starbase One CD Rom. It consists largely of files collected
from the Starbase One BBS, plus some additional catalogues and animations.
You will also find all the collections of shareware that Starbase One has
offered at Astrofest '94 and Astrofest '96.
This text file will help you get the most out of the CD Rom, describing
what is in each directory.
Some general notes:
Images are in JPEG or GIF format, and you will need a viewer. See the
astrofest disk collections for some possibilities. Astrofest disks all
have a SHOWME batch file, which will help you install. Look for a
FILES.BBS file in large collection directories - these will describe
the individual files.
Please note also that most of the programs provided are SHAREWARE - this
is a try-before-you-buy process, not free software. If you find yourself
using a program a lot, you should send the author the amount requested,
which will often bring you an enhanced version, a manual, or other benefit.
If you get into trouble, send an email to:
support@starbase1.compulink.co.uk
and we will try and help you out. Please note that we are NOT responsible
for supporting the programs, this is the authors job.
You can also make contact via the Starbase One BBS - in the UK on:
(44) 0171-703-3593 or (44) 0171-701-6914 I believe that Starbase One's
collection of astronomy and space files is second to none in the world.
There is more information in \A96\DISK8, including a list of files,
a help file for using the BBS, and other useful tools.
Starbase One is on the World Wide Web at:

CD Rom directories:
\A94
This contains the shareware disks offered at Astrofest '94. You will find
a file called CATALOG.TXT in this directory, describing what is in each of
the subdirectories. Each subdirectory corresponds to a 720k floppy disk,
and contains a file called SHOWME.BAT. Typing SHOWME in a directory will
describe installation of the programs. Some programs have since been
upgraded, by progs in the A96 directory.
\A96
This contains the shareware disks offered at Astrofest '96. You will find
a file called CATALOG.TXT in this directory, describing what is in each of
the subdirectories. Each subdirectory corresponds to a 1.44mb floppy disk,
and contains a file called SHOWME.BAT. Typing SHOWME in a directory will
describe installation of the programs.
Please note that due to restrictions by the authors of Paint Shop Pro, it
was not possible to include this excellent image editor on the CD.
\ANIMATE
This contains 110 megabytes of FLI/FLC animations, ready to view.
Just type PLAYER and you will get a rolling slideshow of the animations,
from DOS or Windows. Note that the more memory you have, the more likely
they are to play smoothly - you will probably get best results from DOS.
\HST
This directory contains over 8 Megabytes of images and press releases from
the Hubble Space Telescope.
\HSTBIG
This directory contain some High Resolution versions of Hubble Space
Telescope. These can be VERY large when unpacked, so you might need
a lot of memory to view them properly.
\SL9
This directory contains nearly 18 Mb of Shoemaker Levy images,
animations and the like of the Shoemaker Levy 9 impact. Note that the
file FILES.BBS contains descriptions of the files in the directory.
\IMAGES
The Images Directory is further broken down into:
\APOLLO General Apollo material
\APOLLO11 Apollo 11 material
\APOLLO13 Apollo 13 images
\PLANETS There is a separate directory for each planet under this one.
There is also a LUNARORB directory with Lunar Orbiter images.
\GEMINI There is a separate directory under this for each mission.
\MESSIER This contains an image of each messier object.
\APO13OREV This contains the report and diagrams from the Apollo 13
accident review.
\HOMEPLAN This contains the Shareware program Home Planet - this a BIG
program, and is a pain to download or order on floppy disk.
Run the HOMEPLAN.EXE from your hard drive, then run
SETUP.EXE
It is VERY greedy on hard disk space. (20 Mb+)
hp2-9512.exe is an upgrade to be added after you install.
\CATALOG This directory has many astronomical catalogues beneath it. To
save large and messy uncompressing to your hard drive, these
have been provided in an uncompressed format.
You will find a file LISTCAT.TXT in this directory, describing
each directory beneath it.
