  18. ===============

  20. The demo version of Power Chords Pro works just like the retail version
  21. except for two things:
  22.  
  23. 1) It will automatically end after 60 minutes of use.
  24.  
  25. 2) It will not allow you to save or export Power Chords or MIDI data.
  26.  
  27.  
  28. If you are new to Power Chords Pro we suggest you take the following
  29. steps:
  30.  
  31. 1: Run the Demo script (special DEMO icon). This will give you a brief
  32. overview of Power Chords Pro. The first time you start Power Chords Pro
  33. whether in regular mode or running a script, it will bring up the MIDI
  34. Config dialog. If you need to reconfigure later, the dialog is accessed
  35. from the MIDI... menu option.
  36.  
  37. 2: Run each of the tutorial scripts in turn (special TUTOR icons). These
  38. tutorials are absolutely the best way of learning how Power Chords Pro
  39. works.

  44. II. Gravis UltraSound Users
  45. ===========================
  46.  
  47. To get the most out of the additional capabilities of Power Chords Pro, we
  48. recommend you increase the RAM on your UltraSound card to its maximum.
  49.  
  50. If you have only 256K on you UltraSound, make sure you have select the
  51. 'Conserve Memory' option in the UltraSound audio drive setup. (See page
  52. 19 of the Power Chords section of the UltraSound manual.)
  53.  
  54. You can save a lot of patch memory while writing songs by setting some
  55. drumkit items to <None>.
  56.  
  57. If you fail to hear some patches, check the remaining patch memory by
  58. selecting "MIDI..." from the Power Chords Pro menu, and then "UltraSound
  59. Options...". If it show less that 40,000 or 50,000 bytes left, you are
  60. likely running low on patch memory and should take some of the steps
  61. listed above.
  62.  
  63. * New Patch Bank Support *
  64.  
  65. Power Chords Pro now has special support for banks of patches when using
  66. the Gravis UltraSound card. You can select the current melodic and drum
  67. bank from the "UltraSound Options..." menu item.
  68.  
  69. To use banks, you must have the newer Windows drivers. ULTRASND.DRV
  70. (located in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory) should be dated 10/93 or
  71. later. 
  72.  
  73. To create a 'bank' of sounds, you create a section in your ULTRASND.INI
  74. file with a bank number, a directory, and the sounds in the bank. (You can
  75. use the Windows application NOTEPAD or any other ascii text editor to do
  76. this). For example, lets say you have some patches that you want to put in
  77. a separate bank, numbered 7.  You would create the following entry in the
  78. ULTRASND.INI file:
  79.  
  80. [Melodic Bank 7]
  81. PatchDir=C:\ULTRASND\MYBANK\
  82. 0=bosendrf
  83. 1=toypiano
  84. 33=mnstrbas
  85. 57=heinzpat
  86.  
  87. To activate bank 7, select 'MIDI...', then 'UltraSound Options...' from
  88. the Power Chords Pro menu. In the dialog that appears, change the melodic
  89. bank number to 7 and then click OK.
  90.  
  91. Now that you have activated bank 7, patch numbers 0, 1, 33, and, 57 will
  92. be loaded from the patch files in C:\ULTRASND\MYBANK. For example, patch
  93. 1, will load C:\ULTRASND\MYBANK\TOYPIANO.PAT.
  94.  
  95. Any patch numbers selected that are not specified in bank 7 are loaded
  96. from the default list in [Melodic Bank 0]. So only the sounds specifically
  97. located in bank 7 will change from the defaults.
  98.  
  99. Drum patches work in a similar fashion. Say you want to load up a couple
  100. of TR-808 patches. You would add a section to the ULTRASND.INI that looks
  101. like this:

  111. III. New Features of Power Chords Pro:

  117. * New features in version 2.0.02 from 2.0.00 *

  119. We've added a few goodies to this release including the following.
  120.  
  121. New: Rhythm Editor Synchronized Playback and Record
  122. ---------------------------------------------------
  123.  
  124. Using the options dialog on the Rhythm Editor (red checkmark) you can sync
  125. the current Rhythm Editor part to either a particular bar in the song, or
  126. to the other Rhythm Editor parts. When you record or playback the part,
  127. whatever it is synced to will also be played. This lets you work in
  128. context with the song or with other parts. Its great for recording in from
  129. MIDI while jamming along with the song, where the part you're recording is
  130. intended to go.

  132. New: Rhythm Editor Undo
  133. -----------------------
  134.  
  135. You can now undo and redo changes made to the rhythm editor. To engage
  136. this feature, select 'Edit', then 'Undo Rhythm Editor Changes' from the
  137. Power Chords Pro menu. Here are the activities that are 'undoable':
  138.  
  139. - copying a new part to the Rhythm Editor
  140. - selecting the Options button 
  141. - clearing the contents of the Rhythm Editor
  142. - recording a new part
  143. - selecting the Power Effects button
  144. - moving, copying, or deleting a highlighted area 
  145.  
  146.  
  147. New: Rhythm Editor Transpose
  148. ----------------------------
  149.  
  150. To transpose a melody or bass part in the Rhythm Editor, click the options
  151. button (red checkmark) and then select the transpose amount (up to plus or
  152. minus 12 semitones) in the Transpose list box.

  155. New: Rhythm Editor Trim Front Function
  156. --------------------------------------
  157.  
  158. When you shorten the length of a Rhythm Editor part in the options dialog
  159. (red checkmark), a check box appears labeled 'Trim Front'. If you check
  160. this box, the part will be shortened by removing bars from the front
  161. instead of the end.

  164. New: Global Edit Transpose Option
  165. ---------------------------------
  166.  
  167. A new option has been added to transpose the selected parts when doing
  168. global editing (red checkmark on any of the part palettes).
  169.  
  170.  
  171. * New features in Power Chords Pro from Power Chords 1.0, and 1.1 *

  173. Button Bar
  174. ---------
  175.  
  176. All windows can now be quickly accessed by the button bar at the left
  177. of the screen.
  178.

  180. Rhythm Editor
  181. -------------
  182.  
  183. The Rhythm Editor now supports drag and drop editing. To turn it on,
  184. click the curved arrow button. Highlight areas of notes by clicking and
  185. dragging. To copy notes, hold Ctrl while dragging.
  186.  
  187. The new Options dialog is accessed by clicking on the red checkmark
  188. button.  You can change the length, patches, title etc. of any rhythm
  189. in the Rhythm Editor at any time.
  190.  
  191. The lock button forces whatever is in the Rhythm Editor to stay there
  192. when other parts are dragged in. This can be used to combine parts or
  193. to change the type of a part by dragging in a part of a different type
  194. than the one in the locked Rhythm Editor.
  195.  
  196. You can set the start playback beat by clicking above the grid - a
  197. black bar appears and playback starts from the marked beat when play
  198. pressed, instead of from the beginning of the part.
  199.  
  200. You can now record data from the following sources into the Rhythm Editor:
  201.     MIDI in
  202.     On screen fretboard
  203.     On screen keyboard
  204.     Chord palette
  205.  
  206. Chord Progression Recording - You can also record chord progressions -
  207. click Rec on the Rhythm Editor, then click on the chords in the chord
  208. palette in real time. Select the dialog box options after recording to
  209. route the data to the song window as a chord progression.
  210.  
  211. Power Effects - are accessed via the button on the Rhythm Editor with
  212. the dial on it. To generate up/down/alt strums, put notes in the chord
  213. rhythm section of the Rhythm Editor. Notes which start at the same time
  214. are staggered to create the strums. 
  215.  
  216. The drum roll generator works on rows of consecutive notes.
  217.  
  218. You can apply effects to only the currently highlighted notes, too
  219. (curved arrow button).

  222. Song Window
  223. ------------
  224.  
  225. We now support 16 melodies per bar. The palettes are expanded too - 64
  226. items, 128 chords in the Chord Palette. Check out the different song
  227. options (red checkmark button).
  228.  
  229. Chord Rhythms can now have their own patches/midi channels - if set to
  230. No Patch Change, whatever is on the fretboard is used.
  231.  
  232. The song is now 256 bars long.
  233.  
  234. Fretboard
  235. ---------
  236.  
  237. Try out new melody mode (button with 1 note on it) - you can record
  238. melodies into the Rhythm Editor this way - including pitch bend info.
  239.  
  240. Strumming is improved and more realistic. Also, shift button (shift
  241. fingers up/down/left/right) function has changed so notes are played
  242. when buttons are pressed, not released.
  243.  
  244. Fretboard tuning and other options are accessed via buttons on the
  245. fretboard window itself.

  247. New Keyboard Window!

  250. You can create chords, and melodies from the keyboard window. There are
  251. many options to configure it they way you want.

  253. Palettes

  256. All the palettes have new scroll bars, tile and casc buttons.

  258. MIDI Import Window
  259. ------------------

  261. From 'File' menu, select 'Load MIDI File...'  and load up a standard
  262. MIDI file. 
  263.      
  264. RIGHT Mouse button operations:     
  265.      
  266. To play a track, click on track name.  To play a bar, click on box of
  267. bar/track you want to hear.
  268.  
  269. Click and drag on boxes with the leftt button to highlight them. Click
  270. on the red boxes with right button to play them. 
  271.  
  272. You can drag parts to any palette, or to the Rhythm Editor. Drag an
  273. entire track by clicking on track name. When you drag more than 8 bars,
  274. you are provided with the option of having the information divided into
  275. chunks automatically. You may specify the number of bars in each chunk.
  276.  
  277. To stop playing info in the Import window, click the stop button in the
  278. window, or right click on another part (it will play) or click on an
  279. area in the window with no track (title area at top).
  280.  
  281. Note that drum sounds imported are reconciled to your current kit. Also,
  282. note the merged drum track which appears at the bottom.

  284. Drum information in imported MIDI files is are assumed to be on channel
  285. 10.

  287. Importing from other Power Chords Files
  288. ---------------------------------------

  290. Select 'File', 'Import from POP File...'. You can import parts from PRO
  291. files (.POP), or Power Chords 1 files (.POW).
  292.  
  293. Use the right mouse button on the part names to play them from the
  294. import window.

  297. Backwards compatibility
  298. -----------------------

  300. Pro can read and write Power Chords 1 files. To write to version 1,
  301. specify a .POW extension. Of course info is lost if there are more than
  302. 1 melody per bar, and songs can only be 128 bars long in version 1
  303. files.

  306. Clipboard Functions
  307. -------------------

  309. Accessed via 'Edit' on the main menu. You can past to the Import window,
  310. or copy from the song or the Rhythm Editor.

  312. Quick Delete

  315. Parts in the palettes, or in the song can be deleted quickly by holding
  316. the Del key on the keyboard and clicking on the part with the left mouse
  317. button.

  340. before trying out the sample drum patterns. Select 'MIDI' from the main
  341. menu, the select 'Drum Kit...'. Click on the button marked 'Load' and
  342. select COOLDRUM.KIT.
