About Mangle
------------
Mangle is an anagram-type word game. Basically, you are given a
long word, name or phrase and then you must re-arrange -- mangle -- the
letters to come up with other, smaller words. Points are given for
each word you come up with, with longer words receiving more points.
The shareware edition of Mangle contains 12 puzzle words/names. That
is, each player can play the game 12 times -- playing each word once.
(The registered edition has many more words.)
Full instructions are available when you start to play. Of particular
note is the fact that you can play for points, against other people,
or just for fun, getting hints from the program.
Mangle was designed to run on a BBS and has been tested on Wildcat
and RBBS boards. Support is also included for boards that create
the "universal" door.sys file -- just about any board can do this
by using the DOORFIX program.
Mangle can also be run without a BBS. Just specify "local" when you
play. (You will have to have DEVICE=ANSI.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file
for this to work. While an upcoming version will not have this
restriction, it does exist in this version.)
People who like word games tend to like Mangle. Try it -- it's fun.

And now for the actual installation instructions:
Accompanying this READ.ME file you will find the following:
MANGLE.EXE - the game itself
MANGLDIC.nn - 12 word lists for the game to use
MANGLE.INS - An instructional screen that the program reads
MANGLE.ANS - The same screen using ANSI colors
MANGLE.INT - An opening logo screen
DOOR.BAT - A sample bat file to get things going (for a BBS)
MANGLE.CFG - A configuration file you should edit
REGISTER.DOC - Information on registering
REGFORM.DOC - A form to use to register
Step 1 -- Copy all files into the same subdirectory.
For Home use:
Step 2 -- Make sure you have:
DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
or equivalent in your config.sys file.
See your DOS manual for more details.
Step 3 -- Play the game by keying in: local
For BBS use:
Step 2 -- Edit the included MANGLE.CFG file to match your environment.
(The changes you'll need to make will probably be simple.
However, if the instructions are confusing or if your board
is not supported in this version, contact me -- I can
probably help you get it installed.)
Step 3 -- Create a door BAT file to execute Mangle. Use the included
samples as a guide (door.bat for wildcat, rbbsmang for
RBBS, doorsys.bat for BBSs producing a door.sys file).
Also see the instructions below.
Step 4 -- Edit the menu of doors on your board.
Step 5 -- If necessary, re-run your BBS config program to increase
the number of doors on your board.
Step 6 -- Repeat steps 1-6 for each node. (This edition of Mangle
does not support multi-node access.)
Step 7 -- Try out the game.
Tough, huh?
Other files are created during play:
MANGLE.SCO - The scores file.
MANGLE.LOG - A log of errors. If things don't work right,
check this file.
2 user-specified bulletin files that contain the top 3 scores
for each round. (These are rewritten after every play.)
(Default names are mscores.bbs & mscores.scr)
This version of Mangle has been tested under Wildcat! using both a
high-speed modem with CTS/RTS flow control and an ordinary 2400 bps
modem. An earlier version was tested under RBBS. Of course, it has
also been extensively used in local mode, without a BBS.
BBS Sysops: You should test out MANGLE once by executing it in local
mode and then once by dialing in and causing the BAT file to be run via
your BBS's door mode. (You can then delete the MANGLE.SCO user/scores file
so you'll have a virgin system.)
MANGLE.EXE can take two optional parameters:
Parameter 1: local - use when executing MANGLE from your own PC
rather than across a serial connection.
(This over-rides any BBS type specified in the .CFG file.)
Parameter 2: 0, if you want Mangle to automatically put each player into
a new round.
any number from 1 thru 12, if you want to play a particular
round; useful if you want to repeat a round in local
mode.
The order of these parameters does not matter.
Typically, you might run mangle in a BAT file with the line:
mangle
or when playing yourself, key in:
mangle local 0
('0' is the default and will be assumed if no number is present)
or, if you do not have a BBSTYPE= keyword in your cfg file, key in:
mangle
Of critical importance to you Sysops: your door bat file MUST copy the
door information file your Board creates to the Mangle directory.
See our sample BAT file for an example.
A word about registration: if you like Mangle, you should pay for it.
There are also incentives to registering -- see the REGISTER.DOC file.
In any case, I very much welcome player and sysop comments and suggestions.
Sysops: if you are having trouble installing Mangle, contact me.
Have fun,
Eric
