I figured while I was at it, since folks here have also been asking
about fax, I'd send the latest press release (dated today) regarding
drop-dead serious price reductions on JT Fax products (note there
are several companies that sell Unix software that works with JT Fax
hardware).

###
Hayes JT Fax 4800 Products
Hayes JT Fax 4800 products enable users to send and receive fax documents
from the PC. JT Fax gives security and convenience to fax transmission
since these capabilities are available from the PC, eliminating the need
to print a document, find an available fax machine and wait in line to
send the fax document. Documents received with the JT Fax may be printed
out, viewed on screen or stored for later use. All Hayes JT Fax 4800
products support a wide range of popular applications packages, printers
and scanners. The products are controlled by the menu-driven TSR Fax
software program and come packaged with JT Fax software and user
documentation.
Hayes JT Fax 4800B -- a half-card for IBM PCs, XT/AT or
compatibles.
Hayes JT Fax 4800 Portable -- a pocket-sized external unit that
connects to the serial port. It is packaged with IBM-compatible cables,
carrying case, and power supply.
Hayes JT Fax 4800P -- specifically designed for IBM PS/2 models
50, 60, 70 and 80 or IBM PS/2 compatibles.
MODULATION
International Data Transmission Standards - Supports V.27 ter (4800 bps
fax) and V.21 (300 bps) standards.

Group 3. Equipment utilizing the Group 3 standard implements advanced
digital transmission techniques for reliable, fast transfer of documents.
ERROR CONTROL
Error Detection - Hayes JT Fax 4800 products detect errors upon fax
reception. Reception of too many errors causes a retry.
DATA COMPRESSION
CCITT T.4 - Supports Huffman encoding, the standard used in the industry
which compresses the fax image for faster transmission.

Program Interface - Implements the DOS command line interface which
allows software developers to write commands for batch processing of fax
calls.
Menus - Easy-to-use menus may be used by pressing the "hot key" which
activates the TSR program.
Phone Book - a fax phone number database may be generated and edited.
One-Step Convert and Send - Enables files to be converted to fax format
as they are being sent.
Application Print Capture - Enables Hayes JT Fax 4800 products to

SMARTMODEM 2400 MODULE
Smartmodem 2400 Module supports all features of Hayes Smartmodem 2400B
including asynchronous communications as well as synchronous
communications through Hayes AutoSync. Smartmodem 2400 Module is an
internal modem module that attaches to Hayes JT Fax 9600B.
MODULATION
International Data Transmission Standards - Smartmodem 2400 Module
supports CCITT V.22bis (2400 bps) and V.22 (1200 bps) transmissions.
Industry Data Transmission Compatibility - Supports communication with
103 (300 bps) and 212A (1200 bps) modems.
TELEPHONE LINE INTERFACE
Dial-up Line - Supports pulse or tone generated dial out or auto answer.
PABX and Business Line Support - Smartmodem 2400 Module operates in a
variety of PABX environments and has selectable features for operation in
business environments.
MODEM CONTROL AND OPERATION
Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Full support for this industry standard
enables Smartmodem 2400 Module to operate with the installed base of
communications software written to this standard.
Hayes Improved Escape Sequence with Guard Time - Allows the modem to
reliably escape from the on-line mode of operation (receiving/transmitting
data) to the command mode (interpreting the Hayes Standard AT Command Set)
without being accidentally triggered by transmitted data. U.S. Patent
4,549,302 was granted to Hayes on October 22, 1985.
Call Progress Monitoring - The modem provides constant information on the
progress of a call. Result code messages notify the user when dial tones,
busy signals, and carrier signals are detected, when connections are made,
and when commands are accepted.
Non-Volatile Storage of Phone Numbers and Configuration Profiles - The
modem stores up to four telephone numbers (36 digits each) in nonvolatile
memory. The modem also stores two user configuration profiles in
nonvolatile memory in addition to factory configuration profile.
TRANSMISSION MODES
Asynchronous Hardware Mode - Supports standard asynchronous
communications for dial-up communications with value added networks,
on-line services, and personal computers.
Hayes AutoSync Mode - Smartmodem 2400 Module uses the system's standard
asynchronous communications port for synchronous communications. Hayes
AutoSync provides remote synchronous mainframe communications when used
with Hayes AutoSync software.
SMARTCOM EZ COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE
Smartcom EZ allows users to place calls quickly as well as create "phone
book" entries for storing and implementing frequently used communications
instructions (phone number, i.d. number, password, etc.). The program
also autotypes text for transmission, provides file transfer error-control
using XMODEM, and captures files to disk and printer.
PROGRAM INTERFACE
On-Screen Menus - A simple menu interface logically groups program
operations. All menu items have "short-cut" keys that allow users to move
quickly to the option they desire. Function keys speed movement to other
menus.
On-line Help System - A first time user is automatically provided with
helpful information about how to start using the program right away.
Smartcom EZ provides a comprehensive context-sensitive on-line help system
that provides detailed information and cross-references to related topics.
From any point in the program, the F1 key may be utilized.
Phone Book - Allows users to store frequently called phone numbers and
other communications instructions to allow quick access to connecting and
exchanging information. New entry automatically requests the phone number
and stores the information under a user definable name for future use.
COMMUNICATIONS CONTROL AND AUTOMATION
Keyboard Macros - Users can assign a sequence of keys and entries to a
specified key, reducing the number of key strokes and speeding up often
used operations such as log-on sequences or information storable to a disk
file.
MODEM CONTROL
Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Takes full advantage of the Hayes
Standard AT Command Set for all Hayes Smartmodem products, including
automatic selection of highest possible speed. Default parameters are set
to work in a majority of cases. A user can also configure a modem through
simple, on-screen selections which Smartcom EZ then translates into the
appropriate commands that are issued to the modem. Users can make maximum
use of advanced modem features without needing to learn AT Commands.
Set-up Strings - Allows the selection of features of non-Hayes modems
when those features are implemented using commands not found in the Hayes
Standard AT Command Set.
TERMINAL EMULATION
VT102/100 - The program imitates the characteristics of the popular DEC
VT102/100 terminal for communications with computers that recognize that
terminal. Provides support of VT102/100 keyboard functions, visual
attributes and other key features. The user guide provides suggestions
for changes to settings if necessary based on possible variances in the
remote system's requirements.
TTY (Teletypewriter) - A widely used type of emulation for PC computer
communications.
FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL
XMODEM - This is a widely used file transfer protocol that is supported
by most bulletin boards and on-line information services and is useful for
transmission of programs or messages without errors.
ON-LINE OPERATION
Printing - A user can concurrently print information as it is received.
Disk Capture - A user can also concurrently save information to disk as
it is being received for later review. This can help reduce the duration
of costly on-line and telephone charges.
Autotyping - A quick way to send a text file to the remote system is to
autotype it. When autotyping a file, text is sent to the remote system as
if a user were rapidly typing it.
SPECIFICATIONS
System Requirements - Requires an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2, or compatible
with minimum of 256K RAM, MS-DOS Version 2.0 and higher.
Printer Types - Serial and parallel types.
