  1. UltraCompressor II detailed information.

  4. AIP-NL (a company located in The Netherlands) has released a
  5. datacompressing archiver: UltraCompressor II (UC). This archiver uses
  6. completely new archiving and compression technology developed by AIP-NL
  7. with help of the University of Utrecht.
  8.  
  9. AIP-NL claims UC compresses 10%-50% better than competing software yet
  10. at the same time can update archives up to 10 times faster. UC is "try
  11. before you buy" software, allowing you to verify our claims.

  30. GENERAL FEATURES

  33.  * BETTER COMPRESSION
  34.         On an average 10%, but often above 50%, better compression than
  35.         competing software.
  36.  
  37.  * SPEED
  38.         Compression is fast and configurable to favour compression speed
  39.         or archive size. Extraction is very fast. UC is also very fast
  40.         when it UPDATES an archive, even if this archive is large,
  41.         stored on a network server or stored on a slow (floppy) disk.

  43.  * RELIABILITY
  44.         Archives can optionally be protected against damage, allowing
  45.         them to recover from most disk-errors without any loss of data.
  46.         UC always works 'transaction oriented' allowing recovery from
  47.         most crashes without any loss of data. It has optional
  48.         double-verification, preventing data loss in case of hardware or
  49.         software problems.

  51.  * EASY TO USE (INTEGRATED HELP)
  52.         UC has integrated help and an, easy to use, integrated
  53.         configuration tool. Only a few commands are needed to manage
  54.         archives with UC. UC can automatically deal with ARC, ARJ,
  55.         LZH, ZIP etc. archives as if they are UC archives.

  57.  * FULL SUPPORT OF OS/2 2.X EXTENDED ATTRIBUTES
  58.         OS/2 2.x extended attributes (such as icons, WPS long icon
  59.         names, WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 summary information etc.) can
  60.         be kept in an archive. They are managed automatically.

  63. BUSINESS USE

  66.  * SCRIPT FILES
  67.         A 'script' file can contain a large list of files (e.g. to be
  68.         compressed). A script file can also be used as a substitute
  69.         for multiple (complex) commands. Script files can be nested,
  70.         to allow the construction of 'building blocks'. Script files
  71.         can be extremely long (multi-megabyte).
  72.  
  73.  * CAPABLE OF HEAVY DUTY TASKS
  74.         There is almost no limit to the amount of files in an archive
  75.         or to the amount of files processed in a single command. Where
  76.         some other programs get into trouble with more than 10,000
  77.         files, UC can easily handle a much larger number of files. Even
  78.         a simple PC-XT can (given time) handle this workload.

  80.  * ERROR HANDLING AND LOGGING
  81.         UC has advanced error handling and logging. This is
  82.         especially important when large collections of files are
  83.         archived from shared (network) disks. In almost all cases UC
  84.         allows you to solve severe problems and enables you to
  85.         continue the operation.

  87.  * STATE OF THE ART ENCRYPTION
  88.         UltraCrypt (a separate AIP-NL product) can protect your data
  89.         with heavy duty enhanced-triple-DES (Digital Encryption
  90.         Standard) encryption. Faster encryption is included as well.

  92.  * STATE OF THE ART AUTHENTICITY VERIFICATION
  93.         UltraSeal and UltraSafe, separate AIP-NL products, can help you
  94.         protect your data against undetected changes (e.g. virus
  95.         infections or data falsifications). They do not use 'security by
  96.         obscurity', but they use digital signatures based on Lucas
  97.         Exponentiation.

  103.  * FILE VERSION MANAGEMENT
  104.         File version management allows you to recover previous 'states'
  105.         of your projects ("... but this worked two weeks ago, what
  106.         changed?").

  108.         Multiple versions of a file (e.g. the MAY 2 21:33:18 and the
  109.         MAY 3 02:17:22 version) can be kept in an archive. UC version
  110.         management is very simple to use. Extracting collections of
  111.         files from the past is trivial with the 'Dynamic Time Travel'
  112.         option.

  114.  * VERY FAST UPDATES
  115.         UC is very fast in updating large archives while maintaining
  116.         superior compression and reliability. No complex commands or
  117.         options are needed for this.

  119.  * TRIVIAL PATH MANAGEMENT
  120.         With UC it is very easy to copy any set of files from anywhere
  121.         on disk to anywhere in the archive and vice versa.

  133.         just one simple command. If preferred, UC will scan archive
  134.         contents for viruses during conversion.

  138.         'business use') can help you to get rid of viruses forever by

  150. This is a reproducible benchmark made by AIP-NL with the help of 'Dean
  151. Cooper's comparer program, Version 1.02'. It compares UltraCompressor II
  152. with PKZIP 2.04g and ARJ 2.41. Of course, the user can perform the best
  153. benchmarks by comparing the tools in 'real life' situations. The test
  154. has been performed on a 486/33 PC with MS-DOS, QEMM and Norton Cache
  155. (flushed before each test) loaded.

  221.         UltraCompressor II detects and utilizes DR-DOS, PC DOS, MS-DOS,

  246.         No, the special compression architecture, which makes UC
  247.         compression superior to others, does not allow us to create a
  248.         small 'SFX' module.

  250. Does UltraCompressor II utilize system resources?
  251.         Yes, UC utilizes operating system, EMS, XMS, network and
  252.         microprocessor specific features whenever available. UC,
  253.         of course, does this in a conservative way.

  255. How much memory does UltraCompressor II need?
  256.         462 kilobytes when no EMS is available, 400 kilobytes when EMS
  257.         is available. Please note that UltraStealth allows you to run UC if
  258.         only 32 kilobytes of free memory is available.

  260. Can "multimedia banners" be disabled?
  261.         Yes, a single toggle in the built in configuration tool is
  262.         sufficient to disable multimedia banners.

  264. How much damage can a "damage protected" archive recover from?
  265.         A damage protected archive can always recover 100% from a single
  266.         bad sector. For "large" archives about 1% of damage can be fixed
  267.         completely (e.g. in a 1Mb archive 20 bad sectors can be
  268.         restored). If complete recovery is not achievable, UC will still
  269.         recover as much as possible from your data. Please note that
  270.         damage protection is optimized for bad sectors, it has no disk
  271.         repair facilities like e.g. Norton Disk Doctor.
