Dodger catcher Mickey Owen's dropped third strike in Game Four was the
Series' memorable boner, but it was not the chief cause of Brooklyn's
downfall. Yankee pitching was. Three Yankee starters hurled complete-game
wins, with each giving the Dodgers only one earned run. And relief ace Johnny
Murphy hurled two-hit shutout ball in six innings over two games, winning one.
Yankee Joe Gordon opened the Series scoring with a solo homer in the
second inning of Game One, and the Yankees added runs in the fourth and sixth.
Owen tripled in the Dodgers' first run in the fifth, and pinch hitter Lew
Riggs singled in an unearned run in the seventh. But Yankee starter Red
Ruffing held on to his slim lead through the final two innings for the win.
Dodger ace Whitlow Wyatt gave the Yankees single runs in the second and
third innings of Game Two, but held them scoreless the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers tied the game in the fifth, and scored an unearned run
in the sixth to finish the scoring and give Brooklyn its only win of the
Series.
Freddie Fitzsimmons, with the Dodgers' best pitching of the Series,
dueled Yankee Marius Russo through seven scoreless innings in Game Three. But
Fitzsimmons' final out of the seventh--a line drive by Russo that bounced off
Fitzsimmons' leg into the glove of shortstop Pee Wee Reese--broke his
kneecap. Hugh Casey, who replaced Fitzsimmons in the eighth, retired the
first batter, but then gave up four straight singles for two runs before being
removed. The Yankees scored no more, and Brooklyn came up with a run in the
last of the eighth. But Russo stopped the Dodgers in order in the ninth to
preserve his lead for the Yankees' second win.
In Game Four, for the first time in the Series, the margin of victory was
more than one run, thanks to catcher Owen's famous boner. Brooklyn held the
lead 4-3 with two out in the top of the ninth. Dodger reliever Casey, who had
shut out the Yankees since coming on in the fifth inning, then struck out
Tommy Henrich for what should have been the game-ending out. But Owen let the
ball get by him, and before the third out was recorded Casey had given up a
single, two doubles, and two walks--and four runs, for Brooklyn's third loss.
The Yankees scored twice off Wyatt in the second inning of Game Five, and
once more in the fifth (on Henrich's home run), as Tiny Bonham held Brooklyn
to four hits and a single run to clinch the ninth Yankee world title.
