Although both clubs had lost players to military service since the
previous World Series, history seemed to be repeating itself. The Cardinals
lost to the Yankees in the opener and won the second game, as they had the
previous year. But this year it was the Yankees who took the next three games
and the Series, as fine Cardinal pitching gave way to even finer Yankee mound
work.
Yankee pitcher Spurgeon (Spud) Chandler, coming off his finest season
(20-4, 1.64 ERA), continued to overwhelm the opposition in the Series. He
held the Cards to two runs (only one earned) in Game One, and the Yankees took
advantage of a wild pitch to score two runs of their own in the sixth inning,
breaking a 2-2 tie for a 4-2 win. Cardinal shortstop Marty Marion homered in
the third inning for the first Cardinal run the next day, and first baseman
Ray Sanders homered for two more runs in a three-run fourth. Cardinal ace
Mort Cooper held New York to one run on four hits through eight innings, but
he weakened in the last of the ninth, giving up a double and triple to the
first two batters. But only two runs scored as he retired the next three men
for St. Louis' only victory.
The Cardinals carried a 2-1 lead into the last of the eighth inning of
Game Three, when a pair of errors, two walks, and five Yankee hits (including
Billy Johnson's three-run triple) undid them. Yankee fireman Johnny Murphy
retired the Cards in order in the ninth to save Hank Borowy's win. Max Lanier
and Harry Brecheen held New York to just two runs (and six hits) in Game Four,
but Yankee pitcher Marius Russo gave up only one run--and that was scored only
because of two Yankee errors in the seventh inning.
In the fifth and (as it turned out) final game, St. Louis couldn't score
even an unearned run, although they knocked Spud Chandler for ten hits. But
they were all singles and were spaced harmlessly over eight of the nine
innings. Three St. Louis pitchers held the Yankees to just seven hits, six of
them singles. But in the sixth inning Bill Dickey followed one of the Yankee
singles with the game's only extra-base hit--a home run--to produce the game's
only scoring, and bring the Yankees yet another world championship, their
tenth.
