  74.      Casey Stengel, in the first of his twelve years as Yankee manager, edged
  75. his team past the Boston Red Sox for his first of ten American League
  76. pennants, then past the Dodgers for his first of seven world championships.
  77. New York and Brooklyn traded 1-0 wins to begin the Series.  In Game One Yankee
  78. Allie Reynolds dueled Dodger rookie Don Newcombe scorelessly through 8 1/2
  79. innings--until Tommy Henrich led off the last of the ninth with a Yankee home
  80. run.  Dodger Jackie Robinson scored after doubling off Vic Raschi in the
  81. second inning of Game Two for that game's only score, while Dodger ace
  82. Preacher Roe permitted the Yankees just six scattered hits--never more than
  83. one per inning.
  84.      The teams entered the ninth inning of Game Three tied 1-1.  But in the
  85. top of the ninth, Dodger starter Ralph Branca, after loading the bases on two
  86. walks and a single, gave up another single to pinch hitter Johnny Mize for two
  87. runs.  Jerry Coleman's single off reliever Jack Banta drove in another run
  88. before the third out was made.  In the last of the ninth, Yankee fireman Joe
  89. Page (who had held Brooklyn scoreless since coming on with the bases loaded in
  90. the fourth) finally weakened.  But after yielding solo homers to Luis Olmo and
  91. Roy Campanella, he struck out pinch hitter Bruce Edwards for New York's second
  92. win.
  93.      The Yankees' victory in Game Four came a little easier.  They scored
  94. first, driving out starter Don Newcombe with three runs in the fourth, and
  95. rapping reliever Joe Hatten for three more runs an inning later.  Brooklyn
  96. retaliated in the sixth, sending Yankee starter Ed Lopat to the showers with
  97. seven singles for four runs.  But Allie Reynolds came on for 3 1/3 innings of
  98. no-hit relief to preserve the Yankees lead--and his Series 0.00 earned run
  99. average.
  100.      After four closely contested games, the Yankees erupted in Game Five for
  101. ten runs in the first six innings as Brooklyn was held to just two.  In the
  102. last of the seventh, the Dodgers came back, driving out starter Vic Raschi
  103. with a four-run rally, capped by Gil Hodges' three-run homer.  But Joe Page
  104. came on to get the final out of the seventh, and held the Dodgers scoreless
  105. over the final two innings to bring the Yankees' world titles to an even
  106. dozen.
