The Yankees won the American League pennant by 10 1/2 games, but in the
Series they were overwhelmed by Dodger pitching. The opener pitted two
all-time greats against each other: Yankee Whitey Ford (24-7 that season) and
Sandy Koufax (25-5). For an inning it was close. Ford fanned two of the
first three batters to face him, and Koufax struck out the side. But in the
top of the second the Dodgers' Frank Howard doubled with one out, and before
Ford could record the second out, two singles and John Roseboro's home run had
put four Dodger runs across. Koufax ran his consecutive Ks to five and had
tied the Series single-game record of 14 by the time Tom Tresh tagged him for
a two-run homer in the eighth. That was New York's only scoring, and Koufax
ended the game with a new-record fifteenth strikeout an inning later.
Veteran Johnny Podres pitched shutout ball through 8 1/3 innings of Game
Two as his Dodgers built him a four-run lead (one of the runs a homer by
ex-Yankee Bill Skowron). New York scored a run in the last of the ninth, but
it was not enough to keep the Dodgers from returning to Los Angeles with a 2-0
Series advantage.
A first-inning walk, a wild pitch, and a single moved Dodger Jim Gilliam
around the bases for the only scoring in Game Three as Yankee Jim Bouton
hooked up in a duel with Don Drysdale. Bouton left after seven innings for
Yankee relief ace Hal Reniff, who held Los Angeles hitless through the final
frames. When Drysdale completed his shutout, only three singles had been hit
against him, and he had struck out nine.
Ford and Koufax tangled again in the fourth game. Ford pitched much more
impressively than he had in the opener, walking just one and yielding only two
hits in seven innings. One of the Dodger hits was Frank Howard's solo homer
in the fifth inning, but Mickey Mantle evened the score with a home run off
Koufax in the seventh. But in the last of the seventh, Yankee first baseman
Joe Pepitone lost sight of a throw from the third baseman for an error that
sent batter Jim Gilliam all the way to third, and Willie Davis followed with a
fly to center that scored Gilliam with the go-ahead run. No one else scored
against Ford (or Reniff, who relieved him in the eighth), but no other Yankee
scored against Koufax either, and the Dodgers, with just two hits, captured
the game and the Series.
