To identify an organic compound by classical means you have to perform chemical tests to reveal the functional group(s) present and hence the class of the compound. Then, using the unknown's physical properties, a list of possible compounds is selected.
To distinguish between these possibilities derivatives are used. If spectroscopic data are available, a less rigid approach is possible.
Physical_Properties
For things like m.p., elements present and solubility.
Elemental analysis and solubility are crucial since they provide good indications of functional groups. Determination of melting or boiling point is usually essential. If available, spectra are also very useful.
Chemical_Tests
Used to determine functional groups and hence the class of the compound.
Many chemical tests are available. Only do those which are consistent with the information that you already have. Normally a more general test is done before a specific one.
Derivatives
Solids that are used to select the compound from within its class.
Numerous derivatives are available. Select only those derivatives that are consistent with the functional group(s) present. Derivatives having characteristic melting points are required.
Name
Allows the name of the compound to be entered and tested for correctness.
Names can only be entered when sufficient information has been obtained. Note that many compounds have several names and that careful typing is required to exactly enter the name as given in the text.

Both the program and supporting disk files are readied for another user. The program is then brought to a halt so that the new user can start from the beginning.
