Troubleshooting
===============
Before they are released, our products are
tested thoroughly on computers running
standard Windows 3.1x and Windows 95x.
It is extremely rare that a CD is defective.
Most problems that may be encountered come
from old device drivers for video, CD-ROM,
and sound cards. A driver is a software
program, supplied by the hardware
manufacturer, that allows Windows to
communicate to a hardware device. These
drivers are generally updated annually.
Please contact your hardware manufacturer
to make sure you have the most recent
versions of your system drivers. If your
system is brand new, do not assume that the
drivers included with your system are the
most recent versions.
In order to reduce the chance of problems
and to increase performance, we recommend
that this program be the only application
running. Please exit or disable all other
applications including: anti-virus,
uninstall, front ends, add-on desktops,
screen savers, memory managers, conflict
catchers, and ram doubling programs.
NOTE: Always write down any error message you
receive.
============================
Troubleshooting Windows 3.1x
============================
The program freezes during installation.
----------------------------------------
Some applications that monitor the
installation of other programs may cause
the installation to fail. Disable all
anti-virus, uninstall, add-on desktops
and front-end programs.
The install may have problems if the hard
disk has corrupted files or if the hard disk
is very fragmented. Please use a disk
utility to check and defragment the hard disk
prior to installing the program.
"Can Not Create Program Group" error
------------------------------------
Windows 3.1x only allows 40 Program Groups.
You need to combine or remove groups and
re-install the program.
Can not Find File or Cannot Read from CD-ROM
--------------------------------------------
Make sure the CD-ROM is in the CD player.
Check the bottom of the CD-ROM for scratches,
finger prints, or dirt. Use a soft cloth to
carefully clean the CD.
Obtain the latest CD-ROM drivers for your CD-ROM
player.
Open File Manager to see if Windows is recognizing
the CD-ROM. If Windows does not recognize the
CD-ROM drive, then contact your system vendor or
hardware manufacture for CD-ROM installation
instructions.
General Protection Fault or Application Error
---------------------------------------------
Most General Protection Faults are caused
by old device drivers. Please make sure you
have the most recent driver versions for
your video card, CD-ROM, and sound card.
Other programs running may cause General
Protection Faults. Prior to installing and
running the program, turn off all
applications and programs. Hold down the
CTRL key and press the ESC key. The Windows
Task List will appear. Make sure that
Program Manager is the only item on the
list. If there are other items listed,
highlight the name of the program and
choose End Task. The Task List will disappear.
Hold down the CTRL key and press the ESC key
again. Repeat the process until only Program
Manager remains.
Some programs load into memory and run in the
background when Windows starts. To disable
these programs, please do the following:
1) In Program Manager, select the File menu
and choose Run.
2) In the Command Line type: WIN.INI
3) This will open Notepad with the WIN.INI
file. In the first section called
[Windows] look through the list for
the lines that start with Load = or Run =.
Place a semi-colon (;) in front of the
word Load and the word Run.
4) Select the File menu and choose Save,
then exit Notepad and restart Windows.
5) To restore the programs, remove the
semi-colons and restart Windows.
Sometimes front ends can affect the
performance of the program. To disable them:
1) In Program Manager, select the File menu and
choose Run.
2) In the Command Line type: SYSTEM.INI
3) This will open Notepad with the SYSTEM.INI
file. In the first section called [Boot]
look through the list for the line that
starts with Shell =. If it does not say
Shell = PROGMAN.EXE, then place a semi-colon
(;) in front of the word Shell.
4) Move down and enter into a NEW line
Shell = PROGMAN.EXE
5) Select the File menu and choose Save,
then exit Notepad and restart Windows.
6) To return to the old Shell, remove the
semi-colon (;) from the old Shell = line
and place it in front of the Shell = Progman.
