  46.   The purpose of this newsgroup is to give authors of software packages a 
  47.   place to post in hopes of finding people willing to test their packages.  
  48.   No source should ever be posted to comp.sources.testers.  
  49.  
  50.   comp.sources.testers should be used as a first stage before posting to 
  51.   any of the source newsgroups, including alt.sources, comp.sources.misc, 
  52.   comp.sources.games, comp.sources.unix, the various machine specific source
  53.   groups, and even comp.sources.reviewed.

  55.   Most of the subject lines should look like
  56.  
  57.     Subject: Need beta testers for ppmtovcr, another portable bitmap converter
  58.  
  59.   or perhaps final announcements like
  60.  
  61.     Subject: Done with gamma testing for ppmtovcr, posted to c.s.misc

  63.   along with acknowledgments. Cross posts into comp.sources.testers are fine 
  64.   when there's an appropriate subject group. Topics like

  68.   belong in comp.software-eng, not comp.sources.testers.

  71. Subject: Why not use alt.sources ?  It seems to have been serving 
  72.          the community well.
  73.  
  74.    There are those that would *disagree*...  Initially, alt.sources was
  75.    established as a place where the net could post sources that was not
  76.    moderated, such as comp.sources.unix.  Its usage has evolved into a
  77.    group where authors post beta software in hopes that people take the
  78.    time to compile/debug them.  The author then hopes to hear of problems
  79.    from those who took the time to look at their packages.  This approach
  80.    forces all problems to be aired in public.  Communication with the author
  81.    before beta testing begins is not how alt.sources works today, flooding
  82.    the net with alpha/beta software is.

  84.    Blasting sources out everywhere is not for c.s.testers.  The idea is to
  85.    put people together to work towards improving a package.  Authors may
  86.    not want to post alpha (read that as knowingly buggy) code to the world.
  87.    Many times the author of a package would like to have a small group of
  88.    people actively working on a program.  Often the author sets up a mailing
  89.    list for the group members to use to pass ideas and bug fixes back and
  90.    forth.  It is much easier to post "oops, I was dumb" messages to an
  91.    isolated, much smaller, and more interactive group than to post messages
  92.    of this type to the world.

  94.    Another problem with alt.sources is that many sites do not take the
  95.    newsgroup because they are on the end of slow links which must pay to
  96.    receive news.  With comp.sources.testers, a site of this type can
  97.    receive this low volume newsgroup and still be a part of the potential
  98.    beta testing community.

  100.    And as for the signal to flame ratio in alt.sources...  Never mind. :-)

  106.    basis.  Do not expect that they will always have the time or interest
  107.    to be a tester.  Their inclusion on this list is strictly voluntary
  108.    and they should be commended for their contributions.

  256.    Make sure that you clearly indicate you want to be included or removed
  257.    from the list.  Please include the types of platforms that you have 
  258.    available for testing.  I will from time to time contact you to assure
  259.    that you still wish to be included on the list.

  264.    Please do *not* post test messages to comp.sources.testers !
  265.  
  266.    If you wish to test your news software, create a local group and try
  267.    using that first.  When that works, locate a regional group to test
  268.    posting articles to the world.  Ask your upstream feed for the name
  269.    of a regional newsgroup nearest you.  If you really feel that you
  270.    must post a test message that needs to go to most every news system
  271.    worldwide, use misc.test, or news.test.  Just remember, messages
  272.    posted to the world costs other sites money.
