  20. Hello, folks. This is the semi-famous alt.suicide.holiday Methods
  21. File. It contains information on many different ways to take your own
  22. life. Some of them are serious, some of them are not. Hopefully, you
  23. can see which is which by yourself, but I'll try to mark them anyway.

  25. This file will be posted on the third and seventeenth of every month.
  26. It may take a while before it gets out to your site.

  28. The early versions of this file were created and maintained by Michael
  29. Marsden, who unfortunately no longer has access to the Net. After he
  30. left, the File sort of hung in a Limbo for a long time, in custody of
  31. a variety of people I can't remember (if you at some time or other
  32. were a maintainer of the File, I'd like to hear from you). I think,
  33. but am far from sure, that Angela Watson (a.k.a. Psycho Kitten) was
  34. the last "official" maintainer, but I got the impression that she no
  35. longer is.

  41. Comments on the content of the file are welcome, generally speaking.
  42. If your comments are of the kind "You shouldn't help people kill
  43. themselves, you should help them towards a better life instead", you're
  44. wasting your time. I've grown very tired of that debate, and will most
  45. probably no longer reply to mail with that general content. The most
  46. basic difference in opinion between me and those who have mailed me
  47. telling me I'm a monster, seems to be that they think that death is
  48. an inherently Bad Thing, while I don't.

  57.    This list is compiled from a large number of sources, the main one being

  70.    This file is provided for the purposes of amusement, and the actual use of
  71.    any of these methods is not recommended without first considering other
  72.    possibilities, such as dying of old age. Please do not pass it onto people
  73.    whom you know to be actively suicidal.. you may find yourself in jail for
  74.    considerable periods. I have a small amount of info on British law regarding
  75.    assisting suicides; feel free to ask me for a copy. Basically, distribution
  76.    to a number of unknown people is fine, but giving it to someone whom you
  77.    know is actively considering suicide can get you into jail for up to 14
  78.    years.

  80.    I should also point out that this file is distributed world-wide, and there
  81.    will be significant differences in the legal aspects in other
  82.    countries.

  84.    Calle: For example, in Sweden the distribution of this file is
  85.       completely legal, according to a lawyer I know. As long as
  86.       you don't physically help someone to commit suicide, you're
  87.       safe. According to the lawyer mentioned above, Dr.
  88.       Kevorkian's suicide machine would probably be legal in
  89.       Sweden.

  188.    [1] makes most of these points:
  189.    *Most drugs cause vomiting. To help stop this, take one or two anti-
  190.     histamine tablets (travel sickness, allergy, hayfever tablets etc) about
  191.     an hour before, on a fairly empty stomach.
  192.    *If the drugs are in tablet form, take the first 20% as they are, and the
  193.     rest crushed and dissolved / mixed in with strong alcohol / food. This
  194.     helps the drugs to hit at the same time.
  195.    *Alcohol helps dissolve the drugs. Don't drink any beforehand, but wash the
  196.     tablets down with vodka or similar, and then drink afterwards while you're
  197.     still conscious.
  198.    *Use a large airtight plastic bag over your head, + something around your
  199.     neck to hold it on. This transforms a 90% certainty method into a 99%...
  200.    *Friday night is a good time if you life alone - nobody will miss you until
  201.     Monday if you work. Bolt all the doors you can. Say you'll be out over the
  202.     weekend visiting someone, so people don't expect a reply to telephone.
  203.    *Some painkillers etc have less effect if you use them normally (tolerance).
  204.    *In general, you need to stay away from medical help until you actually die,
  205.     but there are exceptions to this (that have been pointed out in the text).

  207.    Common drugs:
  208.  
  209.    ==Cyanide (HCN, KCN)
  210.       Dosage:    50 mg Hydrogen Cyanide gas, 200-300 mg Cyanide salts
  211.       Time:      seconds for HC, minutes Cs (empty stomach) hours (full s)
  212.       Available: very difficult to get hold of
  213.       Certainty: very certain
  214.       Notes:     It helps to have an empty stomach (since the salts react
  215.          with the stomach acids to form H.C.). A full stomach can delay death
  216.          for up to four hours with the salts. Antidotes to cyanide poisoning
  217.          exist, but they have serious side effects. What you can do, is instead
  218.          of taking the salts directly, drop 500mg or so into a strong acid,
  219.          and inhale the fumes. This will be pure Hydrogen Cyanide, and you
  220.          should die in 10 to 20 seconds.
  221.          [3]:
  222.          "Hydrocyanic acid is one of the most poisonous substances known; the
  223.          inhalation of its fumes in high concentration will cause almost
  224.          immediate death. Hydrogen cyanide acts by preventing the normal
  225.          process of tissue oxidation and paralyzing the respiratory center in
  226.          the brain. Most of the accidental cases are due to inhaling the fumes
  227.          during a fumigating process. In the pure state it kills with great
  228.          rapidity. Crystalline cyanides, such as potassium or sodium cyanide
  229.          are equally poisonous, since they interact with the hydrochloric acid
  230.          in the stomach to liberate hydrocyanic acid. This poison has been used
  231.          for both homicide and suicide; in recent history, a number of European
  232.          political figures carried vials of cyanide salt for emergency
  233.          self-destruction and some used them. Death resulted from amounts of
  234.          only a fraction of a gram. A concentration of 1 part in 500 of
  235.          hydrogen cyanide gas is fatal. Allowable working concentration in most
  236.          of the United States is 20 ppm. Two and one-half grains of liquid acid
  237.          has killed. The acid acts fatally in about 15 minutes. The cyanide
  238.          salts kill in several hours. The average dose of solution is 0.1 cc.
  239.          [1, DGHS talking about KCN]:
  240.          on an empty stomach, take a small glass of cold tap water. (Not
  241.          mineral water nor any sort of juice or soda water because of it's
  242.          acidity). Stir 1 -> 1.5 grammes of KCN into the water. More than that
  243.          causes irritation to the throat. Wait 5 minutes to dissolve. It should
  244.          be drunk within several hours. Consciousness will be lost in about a
  245.          minute. Death will follow 15 -> 45 minutes later.

  248.    ==Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)
  249.       Dosage:    20-30+ grammes (too many cause vomitting)
  250.       Time:      hours to days, variable
  251.       Available: easy to get hold of (get soluble ones, & dissolve them)
  252.       Certainty: unreliable
  253.       Notes:     Not recommended, fatal dose varies wildly, could cause liver
  254.          & kidney damage instead of death. OD causes strange noises in your
  255.          ears (like a video arcade) & projectile vomiting after about 10 hours.
  256.          Medical help generally effective, so stay out of hospital for a couple
  257.          of days. May cause bleeding in your stomach/upper intestines. Take
  258.          with sodium bicarbinate (eg, bicarb. of soda), which speeds up the
  259.          absorption (sp?) significantly. Take 1 or 2 antihistamine tablets.
  260.  
  261.    ==Paracetamol (aka acetaminopren / tylenol)
  262.       Dosage:    15+ grammes, 20+ is better
  263.       Time:      10 hours fatal damage, but 2 weeks to actually die
  264.       Available: easy to get hold of
  265.       Certainty: fairly reliable
  266.       Notes:     Once 10-12 hours is up, you've had it, but you still live for
  267.          a week or two after that. Probably better to wait 15 hours just to
  268.          make sure. Horrible side effects during this time (some of which are:
  269.          acute toxic hepatitis, renal failure, cerebral oedema, intra-abdominal
  270.          bleeding, aspiration pneumonia, haemophilia). Too small dose causes
  271.          severe liver damage. Accidental deaths are very common. There are few
  272.          if any side effects before the damage becomes fatal; occasionally
  273.          vomitting and nausea.

  275.    ==Sleeping tablets (see specific notes for each kind)
  276.       * See later entries for amobarbital, butabarbital, diazepam, flurazepam,
  277.         glutethimide, chloral hydrate, hydromorphone, meprobamate, methyprylon,
  278.         meperidine (pethidine), methadone, morphine, orphenadrine,
  279.         phenobarbital [also check trade names in same entries].

  281.    ==Alcohol (spirits preferably, your choice)
  282.       Dosage:    1/2 litre vodka?, similar. Varies from person to person.
  283.       Time:      about 8 hours
  284.       Available: good
  285.       Certainty: unreliable
  286.       Notes:     will cause liver and kidney damage if 'rescued' before death.
  287.          Drink it all at the same time, quickly as possible. Dosage is
  288.          questionable, I don't have any figures. Taking the spirits as an
  289.          enema is supposed to be a very quick way of absorbing alcohol, but a
  290.          less unpleasant way is to inject it. The dosage it takes to kill you
  291.          depends on whether you drink normally, the state of your liver,
  292.          whether you pass out on your back or not.
  293.          [3]: "The fatal dose of pure alcohol in an average adult is 300-400 mL
  294.          (750-1000 mL of 40% alcohol) if consumed in less than one hour. Apart
  295.          from the effects of overdosage, death after alcohol consumption can
  296.          occur as a result of choking on vomit while unconscious. .....
  297.          Consequences such as liver damage occur after chronic consumption."
  298.          Alcohol helps other drugs to dissolve. Don't drink it in advance, wash
  299.          down tablets with it, & follow by drinking another few glasses of
  300.          spirits.

  302.    ==Water
  303.       Dosage:    14 litres mentioned
  304.       Time:      12 hours or so?
  305.       Available: always available
  306.       Certainty: unknown
  307.       Notes:     works by washing out the salts in your body, until the cells
  308.          fail (osmotic balance buggered up). You need to keep drinking
  309.          continually until you collapse. Unusual method. Someone suggested it
  310.          would also cause cramps. The following is something from [2]:
  311.          "About a year ago a local newspaper carried a story about a
  312.          woman who had drunk herself to death. Apparently she had ingested
  313.          something mildly poisonous, and when she called her doctor asking him
  314.          what to do, he told her to drink lots of water and see him in the
  315.          morning. She got to it and managed to drink no less than 14 litres of
  316.          water before the osmotic balance in her body was so upset it could no
  317.          longer function and she died (don't know how quickly)".

  319.      Calle: The above anecdote originally came from me, and the
  320.         death described occured in VΣxj÷, Sweden.
  321.         Unfortunately I no longer remember which newspaper I
  322.         saw it in.

  324.         Recently, I was told about a similar case in San
  325.         Antonio. It supposedly happened a couple of years ago
  326.         and was reported in the local San Antonio Express/News.

  329.    ==Bleach and other corrosives (lye, drain cleaning fluids)

  335.          the stomach acids escaping, and doing their dirty work in your vital

  340.    ==Insulin (injected)

  345.       Notes:     Supposed to be quite pleasant (eg insulin shock treatments
  346.          used for some psychiatric condition).

  354.          these are light enough to go through the skin). Stick your hand in a
  355.          bucket of propane and see how many seconds you last...

  357.    ==Oil of Wintergreen/Methyl Salicylate (in lungs/injected)
  358.       Dosage:    Probably similar to petrol (20 ml)

  360.       Available: Not available in concentration
  361.       Certainty: Don't know
  362.       Notes:     Don't have enough information on this one to be able to say
  363.          anything about it. If it is just taken normally, it is the same as
  364.          aspirin.

  366.    ==Malathion (insecticide) (entry revised by Calle)
  367.       Dosage:    A few bottles, at least
  368.       Time:      2 to 3 hours
  369.       Available: From a large garden centre or DIY shop
  370.       Certainty: not so good
  371.       Notes:     A correspondent mentions that the LD50 of this stuff
  372.          is 1 g/kg in rats, and adds that there is not nearly
  373.          that much in a bottle. He also mentions that it is
  374.          treatable. Instead of this, he recommends parathion,
  375.          if you really want to use an insecticide.

  377.    ==Phosphine gas from aluminium phosphide pesticide (ALP)
  378.       Dosage:    Single 3 gramme tablet (".. is enough to kill 10 people")
  379.       Time:      About 2 hours
  380.       Available: Difficult. Used in India, sold on black market.
  381.       Certainty: Without medical help, and using fresh pill, very good
  382.       Notes:     This is a common way of committing suicide in Indian villages.
  383.          There is no specific antidote to this. The pills are 3 grammes of ALP,
  384.          which produces lethal phosphine gas when it comes in contact with
  385.          hydrochloric acid or water in the stomach. After severe vomiting, the
  386.          victim loses consciousness, the blood vessels rupture, and body
  387.          cavities fill with blood. While the pill is exceedingly lethal, some
  388.          escape death because the rate of the gas' release declines with the
  389.          pill's age and use, and exposure to moisture.  Trouble with this one
  390.          is the availability, and it also looks like a rather unpleasant.

  392.    ==Rat poison (Warfarin)
  393.       Dosage:    not known
  394.       Time:      Hours to terminal damage, days to actual death
  395.       Available: Available
  396.       Certainty: Certain given suffient dosage. Most probably treatable.
  397.       Notes:     This is one of the truly unpleasant poisons, along with
  398.          Paracetamol/Acetylminopren. I think it causes cerebral haemorage (rat
  399.          poison works by giving the unfortunate rat haemophillia). Doctors
  400.          can't do anything about it, they just leave you to die in agony on an
  401.          intensive care ward.
  402.  
  403.       Calle: Since human haemophiliacs usually live quite ordinary
  404.          lives, the above sounds rather improbable.
  405.  
  406.    ==Caffeine
  407.       Dosage:    20 grammes (someone said 8 -> 10 grammes)
  408.       Time:      not known
  409.       Available: Caffeine tablets available in Chemist shops
  410.       Certainty: don't know
  411.       Notes:     I don't know very much about this.  There isn't all that much
  412.          caffeine in coffee, maybe 200 mg.
  413.  
  414.    ==Potassium Chloride (injected in solution) / KCl
  415.       Dosage:    not known (try 20cc injection of strong solution)
  416.       Time:      Seconds to minutes
  417.       Available: Widely available
  418.       Certainty: Certain given correct dosage
  419.       Notes:     Causes heart attack (which is painful). May be difficult
  420.          for coroner to realise it was suicide rather than a natural heart
  421.          attack. An excess of K+ in the blood interferes with nerve signals,
  422.          and stops muscles and nerves from working. So when it reaches your
  423.          heart, the heart stops.
  424.  
  425.    ==Nitrogen gas (or other inert gas)
  426.       Dosage:    Several litres uncompressed is minimum
  427.       Time:      Minutes
  428.       Available: Try plumber, or welding supplies company
  429.       Certainty: Certain
  430.       Notes:     This is really a form of asphyxiation, (see later), but is
  431.          particularly good since you don't experience the lack of oxygen (what
  432.          people really experience is the EXCESS of carbon dioxide).
  433.  
  434.    ==Nitrous oxide (N20? NO2?)
  435.       Dosage:    Unknown
  436.       Time:      Minutes
  437.       Available: Dentists supply would be good
  438.       Certainty: reasonable
  439.       Notes:     Asphyxiate yourself with laughing gas. Nice.
  440.  
  441.    ==Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  442.       Dosage:    5% concentration or so?
  443.       Time:      Minutes to hours depending on concentration
  444.       Available: You get it out of a car exhaust, you used to be able to use
  445.          "town gas" (eg, stick your head in the cooker) but this is no longer
  446.          available
  447.       Certainty: Fairly certain, as long as you aren't "rescued"
  448.       Notes:     Causes brain damage.
  449.  
  450.       Calle: A correspondent from Denmark, where you still can use
  451.          "town gas" to kill yourself, says that even though it's
  452.          possible it's not a good idea. He tells of an incident
  453.          where a family committed suicide by turning on the gas
  454.          and waiting. Apparently, the heavier-than-air carbon
  455.          monoxide leaked through the floor and reached the people
  456.          in the apartment below. Not nice.
  457.  
  458.          The actual cause of death is asphyxiation, since the
  459.          carbon monoxide binds tighter to haemoglobine than oxygen
  460.          does (the oxygen gets crowded out, so to speak).

  467.       Notes:     This was used in the first world war in the trenches.

  1031.    Certainty: 90% for 6 stories, increasing after that
  1032.    Notes:     Difficult to overcome fear of heights, many people can't do it.
  1033.       Totally painless if high enough, but very frightening. Easily discovered
  1034.       if seen on/near roof/windows. Access fairly easy in a city, otherwise
  1035.       difficult. Risk of spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair. Ever
  1036.       tried killing yourself if you are paralysed from the neck down? Email
  1037.       conversations suggest 10+ stories works ALMOST all of the time. Try to
  1038.       land on concrete. Quote - "9 out of 10 people who fall 6 stories will
  1039.       die". Note that it may take a while for many of those 90% to die.

  1041. ==4. SLITTING WRISTS OR OTHER (often not effective)
  1042.    Time:      Minutes if major artery cut, eternity otherwise.
  1043.    Available: You really need a razor sharp knife. Razors are pretty tricky
  1044.               to hold when they are covered with blood.
  1045.    Certainty: possible if you cut an artery, improbable otherwise
  1046.    Notes:     Painful at first. Danger of discovery. This is a very common
  1047.       suicide 'gesture' and hardly ever results in anything other than a scar.
  1048.       A lot of will power required to cut deeply into groin or carotid
  1049.       arteries, which are the only ones likely to kill you. Don't bother with
  1050.       this method. Cutting your throat is difficult due to the fact that the
  1051.       carotid arteries are protected by your windpipe (feel where your arteries
  1052.       are with your fingertips, & slice from the side). I've seen photos of
  1053.       people who have used this method - the depth of the cut required is
  1054.       amazing. If you want to cut your wrists, cut along the blue line (vein)
  1055.       on the underside of your wrist, but cut deeply so that the artery
  1056.       underneath is exposed. Cut this lengthways with a razor or similar. The
  1057.       traditional hot bath does help, since it keeps the blood flowing quickly,
  1058.       slows down clotting, and is nice to lie back and relax in. Position
  1059.       yourself so that your wrists don't fall inwards against your body,
  1060.       blocking off blood flow.
  1061.  
  1062.       Calle: A posting to A.S.H. suggests using the kind of equipment
  1063.          they use when you give blood to a blood bank, i.e., a
  1064.          needle in a blood vessel and a piece of tubing. It sounds
  1065.          like it would remove several of the disadvantages of the
  1066.          ordinary slitting-wrists method.
  1067.  
  1068. ==5. BULLET
  1069.    Time:      Microseconds unless you are unlucky (mins/hours)
  1070.    Available: Difficult in UK, easier in USA (get a shotgun)
  1071.    Certainty: Certain
  1072.    Notes:     Painless if worked, otherwise painful & brain damage.
  1073.       Danger of discovery of weapon or ammunition. Not at all common in UK,
  1074.       more common in USA where guns available. Brain damage & other effects if
  1075.       you survive. Death either instantaneous, or prolonged. Lots of will power
  1076.       needed to fire gun ('hesitation marks' are bullets/pellets embedded in
  1077.       the wall, when you jerk the gun as you fire). Bullet can miss vital parts
  1078.       in skull, deflect off skull. If you have a choice, use a shotgun rather
  1079.       than a rifle of a pistol, since it is so much more effective. ("shotgun"
  1080.       entry later). Ammunition to use is: .458 Winchester Magnum, or soft-point
  1081.       slugs with .44 Magnum. Also you could use a sabot round, which is a
  1082.       plastic wedge with a smaller thing in it. These rounds are rather
  1083.       overkill, the phrase "elephant gun" has been used about the .458
  1084.       Winchester, but if you're going to go, do it with a bang. Note, people
  1085.       usually survive single .22 shots to the temples. The other problem with
  1086.       guns is that is is bloody messy. Your next of kin will really _enjoy_
  1087.       cleaning up after you, washing the coagulated blood & brains out of
  1088.       corners etc...
  1089.  
  1090. ==6. ASPHYXIATION
  1091.    Time:      5 mins to unconciousness, 10+ mins to brain death
  1092.    Available: Anywhere there's a rope and something solid to tie it to
  1093.    Certainty: Certain, if you don't get "rescued"
  1094.    Notes:     Panic reaction is very likely (unless inert gasses used).
  1095.       One of the most effective and most used methods of suicide.
  1096.       Probable brain damage if you are "rescued".
  1097.       NOTE, this can only really be done in two ways: firstly,
  1098.       when you are unconsious (eg, sleeping pills), or secondly,
  1099.       by hanging. Combining with pure inert gasses is a very good
  1100.       suggestion. See "Nitrogen" in the poisons section
  1101.  
  1102. ==7. AIR IN VEINS (basically just a myth)
  1103.    Time:      Couple of minutes claimed
  1104.    Available: Plenty of air about... Need a hypodermic & syringe
  1105.    Certainty: only 1 known case.. patient may already have been dead
  1106.    Notes:     The only case I know about, it killed with 40cc of air. Smaller
  1107.       amounts are harmless. The case was the death of Abbie Borroto,
  1108.       who died in 1950 from a 40cc injection in New Hampshire. She
  1109.       died in minutes. This was the 1949 Dr H Sander case. He was
  1110.       found not guilty to murder on the grounds that the patient may
  1111.       already have been dead when he gave the injection. (A doctor and
  1112.       a nurse could find no pulse earlier the same day).
  1113.       The following 2 quotes are from [1]:
  1114.       Prof. Y Kenis says: "... not a suitable method, nor a gentle
  1115.       death... extremely difficult to utilize as a method of suicide.
  1116.       .. possibly with very serious consequences, such as paralysis or
  1117.       permanent brain damage. .. this is only an impression, and I have
  1118.       no real scientific information on the subject."
  1119.       Dr Pieter V Admiraal .. describes the theoretical air bubble
  1120.       method of suicide as impossible, disagreeable and cruel. "To
  1121.       kill somebody with air you would have to inject at least 100 ->
  1122.       200 millilitres as quickly as possible in a vein as big as
  1123.       possible close to the heart. You would have to fill the whole
  1124.       heart with air at once. The heart would probably beat on for
  1125.       several minutes, perhaps 5 -> 15 minutes, and during the first
  1126.       minutes the person may be conscious."

  1128. ==8. DECAPITATION

  1143.    Certainty: Fairly certain, assuming that you managed to gut yourself

  1145.    Notes:     Painful, even the macho Samurai used a 'second' to decapitate them
  1146.       at the appropriate point, so don't expect to do much more than
  1147.       give yourself peritonitis. Trendy for insane martial arts
  1148.       fanatics and gay Japanese poets called Mishima.

  1150. ==10. DROWNING
  1151.    Time:      Minutes (5 mins to die of drowning, 20 to die of hypothermia)
  1152.    Available: Anywhere there's deep, (cold) water in a remote spot
  1153.    Certainty: Good, just make sure you sink & can't swim
  1154.    Notes:     Put stones in your pockets, tie your legs & hands together,
  1155.       and hop into the lake.. bit of a shock to the fisherman who
  1156.       finds your rotting corpse stuck in his brand new net. Also see
  1157.       entry for "hypothermia/freezing".  However, remember that you can be
  1158.       revived from cold water drowning after several hours, because the cold
  1159.       slows down terminal brain damage. Warmer water doesn't have the advantage
  1160.       of hypothermia, but is more effective in making sure you *stay* dead.

  1162. ==11. ELECTROCUTION
  1163.    Time:      Seconds / minutes
  1164.    Available: Anywhere with high-tension, high-current lines & a good earth
  1165.    Certainty: Somewhat dependant on luck & how much power goes through you
  1166.    Notes:     Don't bother with 110 or 240 volt mains, its just not enough.
  1167.       Some people do get killed with household electricity, but only
  1168.       after several minutes. Use high tension lines, stand in bare
  1169.       feet on waterlogged ground (better still, put a piece of THICK
  1170.       copper cable into the nearest river). Works best if current
  1171.       path travels through your head, or through the heart. Just
  1172.       burns you badly otherwise.
  1173.       NOTE: people have survived massive high-voltage, high-current
  1174.       shocks with nothing but 3rd degree burns to show for it.
  1175.       Sometimes paralysis, limbs amputated etc.
  1176.  
  1177. ==12. EXPLOSIVES
  1178.    Time:      10 milliseconds, or similar (!)
  1179.    Available: Difficult to get hold of detonator & good explosives
  1180.    Certainty: Certain if detonator works properly
  1181.    Notes:     DON'T USE GUNPOWDER or other 'slow' explosives (eg,
  1182.       homemade explosives). Use dynamite or 'Plastique', strap
  1183.       it to your forehead with the detonator, and BOOM! The main
  1184.       problem is with getting hold of high explosives (I know the
  1185.       recipe for Nitro-Glycerine, but home manufacture is extremely
  1186.       risky, and the product is unstable). If you can get a grenade,
  1187.       use it, it's probably the best way of doing this one.

  1192. ==13. FREEZING TO DEATH (hypothermia)

  1196.    Notes:     Soak your cloths in water, get into freezer / outside

  1198.       first - drink yourself silly. If you are near a very
  1199.       cold supply of water (eg, the North Sea, or similar) which is
  1200.       close to zero degrees, this is particularly good, since the
  1201.       average lifespan of someone in the water is 15 minutes.
  1202.       [1] says: ".. have quietly ascended their favorite mountain late
  1203.       in the day .. above the freezing line.. wearing light clothing,
  1204.       they sat down in a secluded spot to await the end. Some have said
  1205.       that they intended to take a tranquilizer to hasten the sleep of
  1206.       death. From what we know of hypothermia, they would pass out as
  1207.       the cold reached a certain level and they would die within a few
  1208.       hours. Of course in a very cold climate there is no need to climb
  1209.       a mountain." [eg, UK in midwinter :-). There was a death in the
  1210.       middle of the city park here just this last winter ('90) where a
  1211.       lady stripped after the park closed for the night.]  A problem with
  1212.       this method is that because it slows the metabolism, and prevents
  1213.       damage to the brain, people can be revived several hours after 'death'
  1214.       occasionally.
  1215.  
  1216. ==14. JUMPING IN FRONT OF TRAINS
  1217.    Time:      Seconds (or hours if unlucky)
  1218.    Available: Anywhere near a HIGH-SPEED railway line
  1219.    Certainty: Depends on your timing & speed of train. Go for decapitation
  1220.    Notes:     Probably better to put your neck on the line, since a glancing
  1221.       blow would probably break your spine (& cripple you). High
  1222.       speed trains need a kilometer to stop, so find a blind corner.

  1224. ==15. SELF-IMMOLATION

  1226.    Available: Anywhere you can get petrol & a match
  1227.    Certainty: good as long as you are far away from medical help
  1228.    Notes:     bloody painful - one of the most agonising ways to die.
  1229.       If you do survive, you will be disfigured for the rest
  1230.       of your life.
  1231.       Try mixing the petrol with an explosive like TNT or NG,
  1232.       this will make it burn MUCH quicker, even if the explosive
  1233.       is very dilute.

  1235. ==16. STARVING TO DEATH
  1236.    Time:      40 days give or take. Depends on health.
  1237.    Available: Anywhere where you can't be force-fed
  1238.    Certainty: Good as long as no medical help & will power holds up
  1239.    Notes:     Supposed to be easier after the first couple of days, since
  1240.       your appetite goes. In a UK prison, you can't be force-fed
  1241.       unless you give permission first, or are diagnosed insane,
  1242.       but I don't know whether this is the same in other countries.
  1243.       Beware - relatives might give permission on your behalf if you
  1244.       are unconsious. (living will / durable power of attorney helps).
  1245.       It may help if you use an appetite suppressant. Amphetamines,
  1246.       and some drugs (MDMA, AKA XTC, AKA ecstasy, AKA
  1247.       metheylenedimethoxymethamphetamine is one such). The problem with
  1248.       these is that they are frequently illegal. I've also heard of
  1249.       something called Aminorex (4-methylaminorex) which was briefly
  1250.       prescribed as an appetite suppressant, but taken off the market
  1251.       since it had fatal side effects... which is hardly a problem!!
  1252.       [1] says:
  1253.       ".. after approximately 20 % of body weight loss, illness will
  1254.       begin to set in, notably severe indigestion, muscle weakness, and
  1255.       _worst of all_ mental incapacity. ... about 40 days before life

  1260. ==17. DRIVING INTO BRIDGE SUPPORT AT 100 MPH

  1280.       is possible to miss your brain entirely, and just blow off your face

  1342.       implications.

  1344.    Calle: If you postulate nanomachines, why not use the deconstructor
  1345.       kind? Take your body apart into its component molecules in
  1346.       less than a minute... A silly method, if you hadn't guessed.

  1348. ==24. SCUBA-DIVING (various fatal 'accidents')
  1349.    Time:      see notes -most are minutes/hours
  1350.    Available: scuba diving gear, nobody around
  1351.    Certainty: see notes
  1352.    Notes:     The first method is to rise 30 metres or so without releasing
  1353.       your breath. Assuming that you can do it, it should cause your
  1354.       lungs to burst. The second is the bends - stay under long enough
  1355.       for the nitrogen to dissolve (30 metres for 30 minutes). go up
  1356.       rapidly without decompression time. This is unreliable, and
  1357.       may cause brain / joint damage. The third way is Carbon Monoxide
  1358.       poisoning - fill your tank with it, and stay away from other
  1359.       divers. You will fall asleep fairly quickly. See CO in poisons
  1360.       section. The final way is oxygen poisoning - however, this means
  1361.       that you have to go very deep with an oxygen-rich mix, and
  1362.       there are problems associated with that. The advantage of these
  1363.       methods is that insurance companies / relatives will assume that
  1364.       it was an accident ('misadventure'), with the possible exception
  1365.       of the CO poisoning.
  1366.       The source of this follows: (from the net)
  1367.       "Rising 30m without exhaling will usually result in an over
  1368.       pressured lung, possible subcuteaneous emphazema, collapsed
  1369.       lung, death usually from drowning in your own blood. Rather
  1370.       painful and usually curable if you are rescued, but fair chance
  1371.       of dying if you aren't.
  1372.       Building up a high residual nitrogen time (say 30m for 30 min)
  1373.       then coming up without decompressing will get you bent fairly
  1374.       nicely. You don't feel much, but your joints tend to start
  1375.       stiffening up after half an hour. Death is very uncertain,
  1376.       coming from a stroke. Brain damage, joint damage etc are most
  1377.       likely. Pobably can be recued but some damage certain.
  1378.       Oxygen poisoning, going down 50+m until the partial pressure of
  1379.       the oxygen reaches a toxic level. Difficult to accomplish, very

  1394.       it a saw attachment, a sucking tube attachment, and program
  1395.       it. Make a head restraint. When you are fixed securely into
  1396.       the restraint, start the robot's program. It will drill a hole
  1397.       in your head, and stick the tube into the hole. Program it to
  1398.       wiggle the tube back and forth so that it doesn't miss anything.

  1431.       then jump. The para will not open and you will reach a terminal
  1432.       velocity of 220 km/h (160 mph/120 kn). Death is instant in the
  1433.       impact with the Planet Earth.
  1434.       This has the advantages of being 'accidental', and your family/
  1435.       friends do not have the additional pain and guilt associated
  1436.       with suicides.

  1439.       reserve parachute (which is not easy, I'm told). There are
  1440.       better "accidental" methods than this.

  1450.    Notes:     This is a modern variant of the Arabic 'Death of a thousand
  1451.       cuts'. Basically, jump onto a stack of unravelled razor wire,
  1452.       and roll around till you die.. it may help to connect a high-
  1453.       voltage, low current power supply to the wire, so that you have
  1454.       spasms, which should keep you getting cut even when you are
  1455.       unconscious. Also, you should make sure that you can't roll off
  1456.       the wire.

  1460.    Available: a car press.. any good junkyard
  1461.    Certainty: certain as long as you can't escape
  1462.    Notes:     This is an elegantly simple one.. get into a car, in a car
  1463.       press, and shortly afterwards be squashed to death as your
  1464.       body is converted into a red pulp. It may be tricky getting
  1465.       the press to trigger, but if you hide in the car someone
  1466.       may come along and activate it. There are other ways of
  1467.       getting crushed, this just happens to be the most effective
  1468.       I can think up on the spur of the moment. Getting yourself
  1469.       run over by a fully loaded articulated lorry is quite good.
  1470.       You should remember that people quite often survive the actual
  1471.       crushing; they die when the weight is taken OFF them.

  1596.       State, USA actually used this method to commit suicide, so it
  1597.       can't be that bad. The posting said that 25 feet of rope were
  1598.       used (about 7.5 meters), which does sound a bit short. Perhaps
  1599.       he had a real awesome car.

  1605.       House paint. You need a type of paint that will not allow your

  1609.       you couldn't decide before what to wear to die in, this method
  1610.       will cause you considerable angst. 
  1611.    Certainty : This is a sure method, provided you have a paint that
  1612.       will block your pores from breathing. Don't forget the bottom of
  1613.       your feet. You must paint every last bit of available skin. If
  1614.       your pores can breathe, you won't die. 
  1615.    Notes : I read this in some theater journal 5 or so years ago,
  1616.       saying when you you do full body makeup, you must insure that
  1617.       parts of the body are left naked to breathe or the actor will
  1618.       die. Usually for full body makeup, they leave the bottoms of
  1619.       feet, and some patterns on the body, like lines so the actor
  1620.       doesn't suffocate.
