  35. \(em the \s-1X.400\s0 \s-1API\s0
  36. and the X/Open Object Management \s-1API\s0 (\s-1XOM\s0). 
  37. At Santa Clara, the group continued work on the modifications
  38. required to the base documents. 
  39. Specifically the group:

  51. The \s-1IEEE\s0 Standards Board has approved the Project Authorization Requests

  56. (\s-1X.400\s0 \s-1API\s0).

  60. The Santa Clara meeting was generally productive for 
  61. the \s-1P1224\s0 working group,
  62. and we
  63. are well under way to producing our draft documents for standardization. 
  64. Progress wasn't what it could have been due to minimal participation 
  65. by the 
  66. \s-1X.400\s0 \s-1API\s0 Association.

  70. The first draft of the Object Management \s-1API\s0 was distributed to the
  71. \s-1P1224\s0 working group before the meeting.
  72. The group spent much of the
  73. week reviewing the \s-1API\s0.
  74. The \s-1POSIX.17\s0 (Directory Services) group joined the
  75. review for one day.
  76. Numerous changes were made to the document.
  77. When the
  78. changes have been incorporated into 
  79. the document, 
  80. it will again be sent out
  81. in the \s-1P1224\s0 mailing.

  85. Tony Cincotta,
  86. a test methods expert from \s-1NIST\s0,
  87. spent much of the week
  88. reviewing the Object Management draft 
  89. and 
  90. test methods already developed.

  92. provided many suggestions for improving the test methods developed thus far.

  94. It has become apparent that the development effort required to build 
  95. test
  96. methods for the \s-1X.400\s0
  97. and 
  98. Object Management \s-1API\s0s could delay the completion of
  99. balloting of the \s-1API\s0s for years.
  100. To resolve this problem \s-1X/O\s0pen is considering
  101. funding a contractor to develop the test methods for these documents.
  102. This
  103. issue should be resolved by the next meeting.
  104. Additionally,
  105. Tony recommended
  106. that he train the \s-1X/O\s0pen contractor for the development 
  107. of the test methods
  108. section of the documents.

  112. Our current plans are to ballot the Object Management
  113. \s-1API\s0 after the October meeting,
  114. and to ballot the \s-1X.400\s0 \s-1API\s0 after the January
  115. meeting.
  116. These ballots would not include the test methods;
  117. Balloting cannot
  118. complete until the test methods are complete.

  120. Currently we are developing the
  121. list of people who will be invited to ballot these documents.
  122. This list 
  123. includes members of the \s-1IEEE\s0 \s-1TCOS\s0,
  124. the \s-1X.400\s0 \s-1API\s0 Association,
  125. and \s-1X/O\s0pen
  126. Limited.
  127. Invitations to join the balloting group will be sent out at the end of
  128. August
  129. by the \s-1IEEE\s0.
  130. To be included in the balloting group,
  131. a person must
  132. return the invitation to the \s-1IEEE\s0 by October 10,
  133. 1991.

  137. technical editor will be the ballot resolution reviewer,
  138. assisted in technical
  139. matters by Enzo Signore.

  143. \s-1P1224\s0 continues to make good progress. 
  144. The primary focus of the Parsippany meeting will be to
  145. continue the review of our draft documents,
  146. work on our
  147. test methods,
  148. and prepare for balloting.
