  32. \s-1POSIX.12\s0 is developing a set of protocol independent networking 
  33. interfaces.
  34. There are no major changes in direction in the group's
  35. direction this meeting.
  36. Two interfaces
  37. are proposed in language independent form \(em  
  38. the simple network interface (\s-1SNI\s0)
  39. and the 
  40. detailed network interface
  41. (\s-1DNI\s0). 
  42. \s-1SNI\s0 is a proposal drawn from several
  43. sources, 
  44. with no existing 
  45. (de-facto)
  46. standard. 
  47. \s-1DNI\s0, however, is seen as a single language
  48. independent specification to which there are two valid C language bindings,
  49. one for \s-1BSD\s0-style sockets
  50. and one for the \s-1X/O\s0pen Transport Interface 
  51. (\s-1XTI\s0).

  53. The group once again reviewed the proposed changes to
  54. \s-1XTI\s0 option management from Gerhard Kieselman, 
  55. following input from \s-1X/O\s0pen
  56. during the intervening three months.

  58. A significant amount of time was spent in liaison with the Transaction
  59. Processing (\s-1POSIX.11\s0)
  60. and 
  61. Real-Time (\s-1POSIX.4\s0) working groups 
  62. as a result of the proposal from the last
  63. meeting to include their 
  64. requirements in the \s-1POSIX.12\s0 interface. 
  65. \s-1POSIX.4\s0 requirements are 
  66. a direct result of ballot objections to the \s-1IPC\s0 interface proposed
  67. in their current draft. 
  68. Given the announced intention of \s-1POSIX.4\s0 to include
  69. a ``simple'' \s-1IPC\s0 
  70. interface regardless of the \s-1POSIX.12\s0 
  71. efforts,
  72. there is some concern within our group that there are no
  73. advantages to the proposed \s-1POSIX.12\s0 changes.

  75. Work between the meetings continues on language independent versions of the
  76. interfaces,
  77. and 
  78. the test methods without which the document may
  79. not become a standard.

  81. A review of the test method
  82. requirements revealed a significantly larger amount of work than had
  83. originally been anticipated. 
  84. This has resulted in a change to the test method
  85. schedule.  
  86. The mock ballot of the \s-1POSIX.12\s0 draft is not expected now
  87. before the second quarter of 1992, 
  88. and the first real ballot not before the fourth quarter of
  89. 1992.
