  30. The Santa Clara meeting could in many ways be considered to
  31. be one of the less eventful of the recent \s-1POSIX.3\s0 meetings.
  32. .P
  33. Draft 5 of the \s-1POSIX.3.2\s0 document was distributed at the meeting,
  34. with
  35. the majority of the test assertions having been aligned with the text
  36. of \s-1POSIX.2\s0 (Shell and Utilities) Draft 11.
  37. This alignment was exquisitely timed to
  38. coincide with the production of Draft 11.1 of \s-1POSIX.2\s0, 
  39. immediately
  40. rendering parts of Draft 5 out of date!
  41. Perhaps the documents can be
  42. synchronized for the next meeting,
  43. or the one after that,
  44. or ....

  46. The majority of the \s-1POSIX.3\s0 working group spent 
  47. most of the meeting writing assertions
  48. with \s-1POSIX.2\s0.
  49. Having already dealt
  50. with the ``simpler'' utilities,
  51. some of the more complex utilities
  52. (make,
  53. pax,
  54. ls)
  55. were tackled during the week.
  56. The next draft should contain assertions
  57. for about 95% of the utilities,
  58. however the remaining 5% could take 95% of
  59. the time!

  61. The ballot review group for \s-1POSIX.3.1\s0 met briefly 
  62. during the week to look
  63. over the objections received during the last ballot recirculation.
  64. Most of these had been
  65. resolved prior to the meeting
  66. and 
  67. it was expected that the remaining items
  68. could be resolved by the end of August.
  69. Another
  70. brief
  71. recirculation ballot
  72. is expected in the Autumn,
  73. with possibly another standard being completed by
  74. the end of the year.

  76. The \s-1SCCT\s0 met twice during the week
  77. and 
  78. finally approved some of the test
  79. method development plans submitted by the other working groups.
  80. The rumour
  81. that this was only in response to moans from the other working groups that
  82. the \s-1SCCT\s0 had rejected every plan submitted in the previous nine months is
  83. not entirely without foundation!
  84. Most of the other working groups, 
  85. however, 
  86. are getting geared up to produce test methods with their documents.

  88. Several members of \s-1POSIX.3\s0 spent time in assisting 
  89. other working groups to
  90. develop test methods for their standards.
  91. Much of this time was spent in
  92. helping the working groups to understand how significant a task this is
  93. and in helping the working groups to develop a reasonable strategy for
  94. test methods.
  95. Some time was also spent in reviewing the work that had
  96. already been done by work group members.
  97. There seems to be an increased
  98. awareness of the problems
  99. and 
  100. an ever improving quality to the test
  101. methods that the working group are producing.
