  2. Since I didn't hear from you for so long, I've started posting to
  3. net.sources - today in fact.  I've only posted part 1 of the 6 so far.
  4. What do you think we should do?  Repost all in mod.sources?  Only parts
  5. 2-6?  Stay in net.sources?  I might as well cancel it, I don't expect
  6. that it has gotten very far yet.

  8. Regarding "permission" from B. Kernighan - is his e-mail okay?  This is 
  9. what I got from him:  (naturally, I have acceded to his request, and
  10. have put copyright notices on all of the sources from the book).

  21.     The programs in Software Tools [in Pascal] are
  22.     copyrighted, so distributionn without permission
  23.     is not legal.  Personal use is fair use, if I
  24.     understand things properly.

  26.     It looks like A-W is not really seriously interested
  27.     in selling or distributing the Software Tools
  28.     code these days, however,
  29.     so Bill Plauger and I have decided that reasonable distribution
  30.     through public networks, bulletin boards, etc.,
  31.     should be permitted as an alternative.
  32.     To protect our interest in the material,
  33.     we would like each copy (per program at least) to retain a copyright
  34.     notice indicating that the material
  35.     comes originally from Software Tools [in Pascal], is copyrighted,
  36.     and that subsequent copies should also retain the
  37.     copyright notice.
  38.     
  39.     Naturally I'd like to encourage everyone to go out
  40.     and buy a copy or two of the book.
  41.     Given A-W's benign neglect of the code,
  42.     we should do better with the increased interest coming
  43.     from ready availability of the code.
