  32. Since Eckankar was founded as a modern teaching in 1965
  33. by Sri Paul Twitchell, hundreds of thousands have
  34. become familiar with the light and sound of spirit through
  35. his writings. Today, the spiritual path has developed into
  36. "The Religion of the Sound and Light of God." Initiates of
  37. this path live in countries around the world. As is true of
  38. any new religion or spiritual path, Eckankar has generated
  39. considerable controversy. 'alt.religion.eckankar'
  40. will provide an open forum for exploring just what really
  41. are the teachings of the Sound and Light as taught by the
  42. writings and lectures of Sri Paul Twitchell and the current
  43. spiritual leader of Eckankar Sri Harold Klemp. It will also
  44. provide an opportunity for people who are familiar with it
  45. to discuss their experience with the teachings.

  47. The discussion is intended for members of Eckankar as well
  48. as those with a more general interest. The primary purpose
  49. of 'alt.religion.eckankar' is to provide an opportunity to 
  50. exchange ideas, information, experience,opinions and 
  51. evaluations of the teachings of Eckankar in an informal 
  52. setting.

  56. 2. WHAT IS ECKANKAR?
  57. For those who would like to know something about what Eckankar is, 
  58. the following (from an Eckankar brochure which is posted
  59. here with the permission of Eckankar:

  64.      Eckankar can bring you direct personal experience with the Light
  65. and Sound of God--with this comes greater spiritual awareness.  And with
  66.  greater awareness you can be closer to God and live a happier, more
  67. satisfying life.

  69. What is the Light and Sound of God?
  70.  
  71.      Often called the Holy Spirit, the Light and Sound are twin aspects
  72. of God.  Known in Eckankar as the ECK, It sustains all life.

  74.      The Light of God has appeared to many saints and mystics.  Saul of
  75. Tarsus had a dramatic encounter with the Light of God on the road to
  76. Damascus.  Moses saw It in the burning bush.
  77.  
  78.      Eckankar teaches how to recognize the Light of God.  Sometimes It
  79. comes as an inner Light of God.  Sometimes It comes as an inner scene or
  80. vision.  It can be a flash of blue or white light.  It appears in many
  81. ways.

  83.      The Sound of God was the rushing wind that visited the disciples
  84. during Pentecost.  Some hear It inwardly.  It can be heard as rushing
  85. water; the single note of a flute; the music of violins, woodwinds, or
  86. bagpipes; or even the buzzing of bees.

  88. What does ECKANKAR teach?
  89.  
  90.      Eckankar teaches simple spiritual exercises to experience the Light
  91. and Sound of God.  These exercises also help us Soul Travel, to move
  92. into greater states of consciousness.  A spiritual exercise can be as
  93. simple as relaxing and singing the word HU, an ancient name for God.  As
  94. we practice these spiritual exercises, we learn to recognize the
  95. presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  We learn that each of us is
  96. Soul, a spark of God sent to this world to gain spiritual experience. 
  97. And as we unfold spiritually, we learn to express the love of God
  98. through service to others.

  100.      Karma and reincarnation are primary beliefs in Eckankar.  We build
  101. up karma as a result of the spiritual law of cause and effect.  The ECK
  102. (Holy Spirit) helps us purify ourselves of karma (sin), making it
  103. possible for us to accept the full love of God in this lifetime.  We
  104. gain wisdom, charity, and freedom.

  106.      Of all religions on earth today, Eckankar offers the most direct
  107. teachings on the Light and Sound of God.  For people who experience
  108. these twin pillars of God, life becomes fresh and new again.

  110. Who is the spiritual leader of ECKANKAR?
  111.  
  112.      Harold Klemp is the spiritual leader of Eckankar today.  He was
  113. raised on a Wisconsin farm and spent years at a divinity school.  In the
  114. 1960s, he found the teachings of Eckankar.  In 1981, after years of
  115. spiritual training, Harold Klemp became the Mahanta, the Living ECK
  116. Master.  The Mahanta is the inner, or spiritual, form of the Living ECK
  117. Master.  The Mahanta gives inner guidance through dreams, Soul Travel,
  118. and the Spiritual Exercises of ECK.

  120.      Eckankar always has a living Master, who is given respect but not
  121. worship. Like a master craftsman, he helps spiritual apprentices gain
  122. experience in the Light and Sound.  This leads to spiritual self-
  123. confidence and freedom.

  125.      Harold Klemp speaks to thousands of seekers at ECK seminars around
  126. the world each year.  Some forty videocassettes and fifty audiocassettes
  127. of his public talks are available.  Author of more than twenty books, he
  128. continues to write, including many articles and spiritual-study
  129. discourses.  Harold Klemp's inspiring and practical approach to
  130. spirituality helps thousands of people find greater freedom, wisdom, and
  131. love.  His teachings uplift and help them recognize their own
  132. experiences with the Light and Sound of God.

  134. Where did ECKANKAR come from?
  135.  
  136.      Saints, mystics, and religious aspirants have long spoken of the
  137. Light and Sound of God.  These teachings can be traced throughout the
  138. spiritual history of the world.  The ECK teachings of the Light and
  139. Sound have been passed on to spiritual seekers by ECK Masters since
  140. before recorded history.

  142.      Although the ECK teachings have ancient roots, Eckankar was
  143. introduced as a modern-day religion in 1965 by Paul Twitchell.  Paul was
  144. born in Kentucky in the early part of this century.  He served in the
  145. U.S. Navy during World War II.

  147.      A seeker from an early age, he was introduced to a group of
  148. spiritual masters who would change the course of his life.  These were
  149. the Vairagi ECK Masters.  While they trained Paul to become the Living
  150. ECK Master, he explored a wide range of spiritual traditions under
  151. different teachers.  The high teachings of ECK had been scattered to the
  152. four corners of the world.  Paul gathered these golden teachings of
  153. Light and Sound and made them readily available to us.  By 1965, Paul
  154. was offering Soul Travel workshops to the public.  He wrote many books
  155. on Eckankar and the Light and Sound of God.  Perhaps the best known is
  156. "ECKANKAR--The Key to Secret Worlds."

  158.      Today, Eckankar is a nonprofit religious organization and church
  159. which has members in over one hundred countries.  The spiritual home of
  160. Eckankar is the Temple of ECK in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

  162. Who can be an ECKist?
  163.  
  164.      ECKists come from all walks of life.  ECKists are homemakers,
  165. business people, and retirees. They are professionals, educators,
  166. scientists, and farmers.  They come from all age-groups, all races and
  167. nationalities, and all religious backgrounds.

  169.      Like most people, ECKists have families, careers, and daily
  170. struggles.  They live a life of joyful participation in the mainstream
  171. of society.

  173.      ECKists know they're responsible for their own experiences in life. 
  174. They know tomorrow is the result of today's thoughts, feelings, and
  175. actions.  They also know that giving love and service to their family
  176. and community is one way to increase their understanding of God's love.
