I am currently working on network routing architectures and I would like
the Network opinion on what I am doing. What follows is the abstract of
the work I am currently doing.
This is the source code for the IPP toolkit. There is also a postscript file
(IPP.ps) that better describes the IPP protocol.
Please do not followup on this newsgroup, see comp.protocols.tcp-ip.

IPP Routing Architecture
Damiano Bolla
University of Kent at Canterbury, England
November 1993
Abstract
This paper describes the structure of the IPP routing
architecture. IPP is an evolution of the IP protocol with
the following characteristics.
- Network structure is an extension of a class B IP
network with Subnet 255.255.255.0. The addresses are
aggregated in further Subnets depending on the length
of the address.
- Address space is of variable length limited to 15
bytes. The format of the addresses are like IP but
extended. An example can be 147.162.2.78.45.44
- Routing tables are all direct tables and all of fixed
size no matter how big the currently used address space
is. The use of direct tables provides the base for high
speed routing algorithms.
- The architecture supports and encourages the use of
redundant routes and load balancing to a given host or
Subnet. This allows and encourages the creation of
extra links as the load increases and provides higher
network reliability.
- Packet size overload is optimised for local area
networks and only the information that is needed to
reach the desired destination is sent on the network.
- Broadcast is supported with IP style. An example of
broadcast to a Subnet can be 147.162.2.3.255 that will
send a broadcast to Subnet 147.162.2.3. Multicast is
supported as an addressed broadcast.
IPP aims to keep all the other qualities of IP and the
related IP functions to manage a link. What changes is
only the structure of an address, the routing table and
routing functions.
