If you only use Aladdin's built-in functions (such
as retrieving GE Mail and staying current with
RoundTable activities), you may be missing out on a
great deal of valuable things that GEnie has to
offer. This situation is easily correctable through
use of Aladdin's Scripts, a powerful accessory to
the built-in features of GEnie's automated
communications program.
Whether you use an IBM-compatible, Atari ST or
Amiga, after using Aladdin a while it can be a
novelty to manually navigate your way around GEnie
for non-RoundTable needs. If you repeat any of them
with regularity, they can be automated using
scripts. There are times you don't have the luxury
of navigating for "enjoyment," and that's when it
becomes a tedious task. Scripting the process can
reduce those chores to a one key-press operation!
Scripts vs. Macros
Macros are recorded keystrokes that can be played
at your command. These keystrokes are replayed as
fast as possible, without intelligent regard for
what they're doing. Useful for automating some
common operations in Aladdin itself, macros are not
well suited for performing custom online
operations.
Scripts, on the other hand, consist of commands
which simulate actions you might do interactively
on GEnie or with Aladdin in general. They can wait
for online queues, open and close capture logs, and
react to various responses from GEnie during an
online session. Scripts used for online operations
can be made "intelligent" in the sense that they
can do your bidding just as you'd like it done.
The Power of Scripts
Let's look at some examples:
Ever wish you could have Aladdin log on and run
an Auto Pass at a specific time of day -- without
you being at your computer?
Wouldn't it be nice if Aladdin could download a
Soap Opera Summary or your favorite stock quotes
during an Auto Pass?
Do you frequently send text files to an
associate's fax machine, but wish you had a less
tedious method of doing so?
Ever considered sending yourself a GEnie
Reminder, but didn't because you'd have to enter
it manually online?
Maybe you'd like to retrieve news, sports, or
weather forecasts from GEnie, but doing so
regularly is just too much trouble.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a simpler way to
access the information in GEnie KnowledgeBases?
In response to each of these questions, an Aladdin
script allows us to answer: "Can do!"
One of the more ambitious scripts available for
Aladdin is called the SMMENU script. From it, you
can choose an operation from a myriad of menu
choices, -- including the normal Auto Pass --
before you even log onto GEnie! Since all of these
script operations are too numerous to fit into
Aladdin's current script slots, your choices are
picked from a menu the script generates. That's
right; using scripts, YOU can create custom menu
screens for all your Aladdin needs!
Getting Started
Aladdin's Script Language is both simple and
powerful, so you can do as much with it as you find
necessary. When you create a script in Aladdin, the
F1-Help facility is at your disposal. This lets you
review definitions and usage parameters of all
script commands while you build yours. There's also
a detailed SCRIPT.DOC manual you can download for
guidance in your scripting efforts.
And there's already a wealth of scripts available
online you can use right away! Unless you're
experienced with scripting in general, this is
probably the best way to get started; download and
delve into existing scripts to see how they work
their magic, or start with a simple one you can
develop slowly along the way.
While a lot of scripts have been created by GEnie's
own Script Guru, Jim Lubin, let us not forget the
wonderful contributions from fellow Aladdin users.
Many people have found areas on GEnie they didn't
realize existed -- it IS a big place -- or
discovered new ways to utilize these GEnie jewels.
Using a script makes access easy, and people often
find information they get regularly this way to be
essential to their lives, whether for entertainment
or job-related purposes. Loads of scripts are
shared in the Software Library and Bulletin Board
for everyone's use.
Finding Scripts
When you do create your own, remember that there's
help available if you run into difficulty. If the
Aladdin Script Guru doesn't have a script that will
do your bidding, or there's not one that can be
customized easily for you, he'll work with you to
"grow your own." If it can be done with an Aladdin
Script, Jim Lubin can find the way!
A great deal of scripts created for GEnie PC
Aladdin will work with the other flavors of
Aladdin, too, specifically Atari ST Aladdin and
Amiga Aladdin. Some may require modification, but
the ideas and basic premise for how to accomplish a
goal are there.
Check the Bulletin Board and Software Library in
the Aladdin Support RoundTable corresponding to
your version of Aladdin. Searching on the keyword
SCR or SCRIPT in both the Bulletin Board and
Library should turn up lots of information -- or,
ask the Sysops of the RoundTable:

One of the most important aspects of things like
scripts are ideas. From small ideas come grandiose
scripts, utilities, and programs. Feel free to help
yourself -- and others -- by being generous with
your scripts and scripting ideas.
Whether you use someone else's creation, or design
and share your own Aladdin script, you may find a
whole new world on GEnie along the way.
