It happens every year. Sometime after the last of
the wrapping paper has been thrown away, Uncle Sam
favors us with a thick pamphlet filled with words
that seem to translate into, "Give me all your
money!" Or, if not all, whatever is left. There's
not much the *StarShip* can do about that, except
to make it easier for you to figure out exactly how
much that is, or perhaps help you get organized.
Along those lines, among many fine public domain
and shareware offerings in the *StarShip* Library,
are the following:
ACESDEMO.LHA (File #21730) -- This checkbook
program by Kent Smotherman is billed as a "complete
and full-featured personal and small business
financial management and tracking system." It uses
a point-and-click interface to track deposits and
payments in multiple accounts, and can generate
reports based on the category or memo fields. ACES
is demoware; fully functional, it will stop working
after 50 transactions. The author is available on
GEnie as K.SMOTHERMAN.
ECONKNOW.LHA (File #22150) -- EconKnow, a shareware
program from George Kell (G.KELL), is a
multifunction financial program with investment and
loan calculators. Need to know how long it will
take to pay off that Visa? No problem. EconKnow
will prompt you for the amount and number of
payments, annual interest rate, and will give you
the bad (or good) news right quick. You can also
calculate the size of the payments necessary to pay
off a loan within a given amount of time, track the
future value of investme nts and annuities, and
calculate the "equivalent uniform annual cost" of
items.
STICK103.LHA (File #22053) isn't an earth-shaking
program, but it might be just the thing you need
for all those facts and figures scrawled on little
pieces of paper strewn about your desktop. StickIt
is an electronic variant of the Post-It note pad.
It lets you create notes, all instantly accessible
from Workbench. If you toss StickIt into your
WBSTARTUP drawer, it will be there -- as will your
notes -- every time you boot.
SCHEDULER101A.LHA (File #22015) -- Looking for a
phone database/dialer and calendar/scheduler
program? Then take a look at Scheduler by Ben Owen.
It consists of a phone and address book,
appointments book, and personal organizer. You'll
need Workbench 2 or later for it. The
point-and-click interface eases the task of
organizing names and numbers, adds numerous bells
and whistles -- like the ability to track incoming
calls by Caller ID -- and helps you organize
numbers and appointments by group.
LABELPRINT201.LHA (File #22041) -- You'll probably
be suffering from writer's cramp after wading your
way through form 1040. If so, LabelPrint (LP) will
print labels for you with just a few clicks of the
mouse. This shareware program from the *StarShip*'s
own Chris Papademetrious (CHRIS.P), lets you create
a database of addresses, and then print selected
items. Addresses can be sorted by any field. As
many as 10 fields can be defined, and any field can
be made unprintable.
If you use a commercial financial management
program, check the *StarShip* Bulletin Board for
late-breaking developments including the 1993
forms. Category 4 is home to a number of relevant
topics including Home Management Pro (Topic 11),
financial management software (Topic 16), and
PHA$AR (Topic 24). Of course, since you own an
Amiga, the world of Macintosh and MS-DOS software
is also available if you're running an emulator.
You'll find Mac and PC hints elsewhere in this
issue of LiveWire. In the *StarShi p*, discussion
of A-Max, various bridgeboards, and PC-Task can be
found in Category 14. The Emplant Macintosh
emulator is discussed in Category 31.
Too Taxing
If you find all this too taxing, stop by the
*StarShip* Library and pick up BUTTONMATCH.LHA
(File #22030). This match-the-colors game by Syl
Lutnes, is a pleasant diversion that will take your
mind off your troubles. It requires Eagle Tree's
Helm or HELMPRESENTER.LHA (File #21957). And
remember, you can stop by at any time. The IRS may
be closed, but we're open all night!
