Computer pilots in the unfriendly skies of air
combat simulations will not find more excitement,
challenge, or realism than in Kesmai's Air Warrior
on GEnie!
Stand-alone computer simulations pit you against
software-driven opponents, where the challenge is
in discovering the weaknesses of the game's
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and exploiting them.
But Air Warrior puts you in a combat arena with
human opponents and allies from across the
continent, each with varying degrees of skill,
guile and imagination. There are no arcade tricks
to learn, no weaknesses to exploit, and absolutely
no risk of boredom!
Unbeatable Combo
The human element alone would be enough to make Air
Warrior unique and infinitely appealing. But Kesmai
has produced a multi-platform game that combines
superb sound and graphics, authentic flight
modelling, smooth frame-rates, and dozens of
vintage aircraft, with weekly training courses,
full-scale campaigns and an ongoing, interactive
exchange of ideas and information with the players
themselves.
As Robert L. Shaw, a career fighter pilot and
author of "Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering"
expresses it: "The result of this combination is
truly AWESOME. Realistic aircraft and weapons
simulation, and the capability to operate over a
high-speed digital network in real time with large
numbers of human players, both friendly and
hostile, have created an air combat virtual reality
unrivaled in non-military simulation systems."
Getting There From Here
A simulation with such a high degree of realism is
bound to have a steep learning curve. But with the
scope of training available to new players, that
curve can be quickly flattened. Budding pilots can
opt for the open public training sessions that are
held twice weekly -- Tuesdays at 2100 hours Eastern
time, and Sundays at 1600 hours Eastern in the
Training Arena (Page 868, menu option 1). Or they
can choose the Air Warrior Training Academy (AWTA
at Page 868, menu option 5) and sign up for a seven
week course.
The AWTA course is a flat-rate package that
includes a Cadet's Guide, a 23x26" map of the
European theatre, access to a private Category and
Library in the Multi-Players Games RoundTable, plus
21 hours of online time split between flight
training and classroom instruction. Cost for the
basic package is $55.95 US; the Academy package,
which includes the Air Warrior Manual, is $64.95
US.
The Next Big Step
When Kesmai released the IBM-compatible SVGA
version through Konami as a commercial boxed set,
they took what was the first big step down a new
path of development for Air Warrior. For the first
time, players could play the game off-line,
practising their ACM against up to four
computer-driven opponents, or 'drones'.
Subsequent versions and upgrades available from the
Air Warrior Library have added a host of new
features -- including off-line bombing; ten drones
instead of the original four; plane shading and
shadows; plus the ability to operate bomber gunner
positions, use tanks, and even ride bombs (known as
'Slim Pickens Mode' among Air Warrior insiders).
According to Jonathan Baron at Kesmai, the next
major release -- Air Warrior 1.5 Enhanced -- was to
have advanced high-res plane shapes and a lot more
off-line play. However, many of those features have
already been added to SVGA beta versions available
on GEnie and although plans also included better
AI, more structured off-line missions and
historically focused terrains, Air Warrior 1.5 may
be passed over in favor of Air Warrior II.
The Ultimate Evolution
In Air Warrior II, the ultimate goal is to elevate
the game to a new plateau, with a full-featured
boxed product that will offer a complete array of
off-line historically based scenarios, more
realistic flight models, and more aircraft. But
that's only half the story.
"We want this to coincide with the development of
an online game that has the feel of our current
scenario play without the enormous need for player
control of every aspect," Jonathan explains. "Our
goal is to create a host AI capable of acting as a
Campaign Manager: setting up missions, filling and
releasing flights, adjusting odds, and scoring
players based on their ability to complete mission
objectives, rather than the current scoring system
that amasses raw, cumulative points."
The objective, he adds, is to create an off-line
product with the same diversity in terrain, weather
conditions, mission objectives, and plane choices,
as players find in the online game -- one with the
same sort of authentic WWII air combat VR currently
experienced in player-run scenarios, all available
any time a player turns on the computer.
Please Release Me
For now, Air Warrior II remains an objective;
release of the actual product isn't expected before
the end of 1994. In the meantime, however, there
are a couple of new developments that will make the
wait much more manageable.
The first of these is the release of two new CD
ROMs through GameTek -- an enhanced version and a
multimedia version. The enhanced CD hit the stores
in late January and has all the features of the
disk-based SVGA game, plus the complete artwork
collection for planes and vehicles, stereo sound
files, and loads of gun camera films from online
Air Warrior play. The Multimedia CD will add
several new elements, including actual WWII gun
camera footage and interviews with surviving RAF
pilots. A must-have for ent husiasts that's
scheduled for release in March.
The other development is the release of Air Warrior
for the Macintosh -- a boxed set that is
essentially SVGA Air Warrior written for the Mac.
It's in beta test now and should hit stores in May
or June.
A Word of Caution
Flying the unfriendly skies has been a hobby of
mine for years. But of all the air combat sims I've
flown (and I've flown a few), none comes close to
matching Air Warrior for sheer teeth-clenching,
gut-wrenching, heart-stopping excitement. No matter
how good a conventional computer game is, once
you've experienced the thrill of competition and
cooperation with human allies and adversaries,
you'll never want to go back.
As Robert Shaw puts it: "I'm convinced you will be
as favorably impressed as I have been. But a word
of caution: This product may be habit forming."
