Congratulations to GEnie members Adina Flowers, Roylene Gomillion, and Lisa
Morgan, who took first, second, and third places respectively in our
Halloween Scavenger Hunt by finding dozens of hidden items in as many places
online. Each of them won up to $45 in online credit while other clever
scavengers took home valuable books and merchandise provided by a number of
RoundTables.
A much grander prize was recently garnered by GEnie member Lorne Astle,
whose entry was drawn in Inside CTV's Hit or Miss Contest. Lorne won a 1995
Ford Escort! CTV is one of Canada's largest television networks, and you can
learn about this contest (which is over now) and communicate directly with
CTV on GEnie Page 1226, keyword CTV. Visit the Inside CTV RoundTable to
learn about interactive TV and what's going on up north. It seems the
perfect time of year, considering that Santa's headquarters is situated in
that direction.
Letters From Santa
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
Remember that your little ones can get personal replies from Santa Claus on
GEnie. Help them send their letters to Santa FREE of standard connect
charges by typing the keyword HOLIDAY or M1110 at any GEnie prompt. They
will get personal replies back from him by GE Mail.
Using HOLIDAY Page Menu Option 7, you can write and send letters to
SANTA.CLAUS free of standard connect charges between December 1 and 20th (or
send them via GE Mail at regular rates). Santa is multi-lingual, of course,
and although he doesn't promise to respond in every known language, he'll
certainly do his best, especially in English, French, Spanish or German. So
get your list ready and tell him what you want! He's looking forward to
hearing from all the good little boys and girls on GEnie this year. (See
"Behind the Scenes at the North Pole" in the November 1994 LiveWire for
details about this holiday tradition.)
While you're at the HOLIDAY page, take a few free minutes to learn about the
seasonal activities taking place online this year. You'll read about
upcoming visits by Santa's Helpers and Friends, the traditions behind
Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa, and find schedules for online activities
throughout the season as well as those planned for Christmas Day.
If you'd like to contribute information about other holiday traditions,
please feel free to do so. Send the details to SANTA.CLAUS or FEEDBACK via
GE Mail.
Free Online Safety Brochure
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
As more children begin going online, they and their parents are becoming
more concerned about safety. The National Center for Missing & Exploited
Children and the Interactive Services Association have jointly produced a
brochure entitled "Child Safety on the Information Highway" which addresses
the issues of benefits and risks for younger users.
This brochure was written by noted columnist Lawrence J. Magid, and made
possible by the generous sponsorship of America Online, CompuServe, Delphi,
e-World, GEnie, Interchange, and Prodigy.
You'll find valuable information for parents, and even a tear-out list
called "My Rules for Online Safety" designed for children to keep at their
computers.
To get your free copy of this timely brochure contact the National Center
for Missing & Exploited Children by calling 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
1994 LiveWire Index
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
Ever wished you could find a particular article you remember in a back issue
of LiveWire, or wanted to know if we recently published a story about a
particular RoundTable or service?
Well, your wish has been granted! Simply download the 1994 Index to LiveWire
in File 201 LW94INDX.TXT from Library 1 on Page 20. This small text file
lists the subjects and articles addressed in LiveWire during 1994, by
pointing to the corresponding article and issue. Along with current and back
issues of the magazine itself, downloading the 1994 Index to LiveWire is
free of standard connect charges at up to 2400 bps on evenings, weekends,
and holidays.
And remember to check the December FileFinder, supplied as a separate text
file (LW9412FF.TXT) with all multimedia versions. It lists all the Library
files mentioned in this issue and comes in handy when you're organizing your
download sessions.
Happy holidaze!
