  5. The house was built on the site of the Palace of 
  6. Empress Yelizaveta Petrovna. This palace-type 
  7. building is very important architecturally, as its 
  8. fasades face three streets. The two-tier 
  9. colonnades give it a solemn outlook. The 
  10. interiors retain some fragments of the 
  11. 18th-century decoration.The house is historically 
  12. linked with many developments in the cultural life 
  13. of the city. In 1780-83 the architect G.Quarenghi 
  14. lived here. In the late 18th century there was 
  15. housed the first musical club in Petersburg. In 
  16. the early 19th century on the ground floor there 
  17. was a well-known restaurant, which Pushkin 
  18. used to frequent.
