  5. The  building was designed for the library and the 
  6. oldest Russian |museum|Custom1|W:180| founded by Peter 1 in 
  7. 1714 end based on his private collections 
  8. brought back from his European travels. 
  9. Originally the |museum|Custom1|W:180| had been housed in 
  10. |Kikin's Chambers|Custom1|O:64|; later the |Kunstkammer|Custom1|W:180| moved 
  11. into a building especially designed to house it. 
  12. the story of the construction was rather 
  13. complicated. It involved many outstanding 
  14. architects of the 18th century. The building 
  15. consists of two three-story wings designed in 
  16. Baroque and joined into a single whole by the 
  17. central volume that is topped with a multi-tier 
  18. tower. After the fire of 1747 the building was 
  19. restored by the architect Chevakinsky, who 
  20. introduced some changes into the exterior. To 
  21. commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 
  22. |Academy of Sciences|Custom1|O:81| the |Kunstkammer's|Custom1|W:180| 
  23. interiors were decorated with sculptural 
  24. allegorical groups, busts and medallions
