  5. The house that was put up in the 1720s and 
  6. belonged to A.Menshikov changed its owners 
  7. and was rebuilt several times. In the early 1800s 
  8. the fasade and part of the rooms in the house 
  9. were changed on the order of the new owner, 
  10. Countess A.La Valle.In the early 19th century 
  11. this building was occupied by S.Trubetskoi, the 
  12. Decembrist, whose wife, nee Yekaterina La 
  13. Valle, was the first of the Decembrists' wives to 
  14. follow her husband into exile to Siberia. It was 
  15. here that the Decembrists' gatherings took 
  16. place, including that on the eve of the uprising.
