  6. F. Mertens owned a big firm trading in furs and 
  7. fur articles that was active in Petersburg in 
  8. 1841. After demolishing it architect M.Lialevich 
  9. erected a monumental building which came to 
  10. house the firm's shop, working facilities and 
  11. workshops.Three glassed arches cut through the 
  12. faτade to the fourth floor level. The glazed 
  13. surface is intersected by the horizontal lines of 
  14. the spans between the floors. Key-stones above 
  15. the arches in the shape of enormous volutes are 
  16. decorated with female fiqures (sculptor 
  17. V.Kuznetsov).The house is a typical example of a 
  18. firm building designed in the classical style of the 
  19. early 20th century.
