- Moika Embankment, 103
- 1766-80. Architects S. Chevakinsky and J.-B.
- Vallin de la Mothe
-
- The erection of the ensemble is due to the
- development of Petersburg as a shipbuilding
- center on the Baltic Sea. The small island that
- was long back, in Peter's times, called New
- Holland, was formed after the Admiralteisky and
- Kriukov Canals had been dug. In 1732-40 the first
- wooden warehouses for storing timber for
- shipbuilding purposes were built here (architect I.
- Korobov). In 1765 Chevakinsky developed a new
- version of warehouses that was actually
- implemented. The faτades and the monumental
- arch over the canal leading into the island's
- interior were designed by Vallin de la Mothe.
