  4. The five-domed two-story cathedral decorated 
  5. with clusters of columns and numerous 
  6. sculptures placed on high pedestals, is one of the 
  7. best architectural monuments of Petersburg.Into 
  8. the decorative design of the facades Chevakinsky 
  9. introduced a new motif never used by his 
  10. contemporaries and borrowed from old Russian 
  11. architecture: all protruding corners of the 
  12. building are provided with three-column clusters, 
  13. the central column set at the very corner, 
  14. contrary to all architectural canons. The wide 
  15. expressive entembleture belt also serves the 
  16. same purpose-to enhance the decorative effect 
  17. of the facades. In decorating the interior of the 
  18. lower and upper churches Chevakinsky 
  19. manifested exceptional capabilities and 
  20. inventiveness. Architecturally he was most 
  21. successful in designing the upper church; it is full 
  22. of air and light and is remarkable for the 
  23. iconostasis which is perfectly designed and 
  24. carved, as well as for the canopy over the altar.
