THE SMALL HERMITAGE
Dvortsovaya Embankment, 36
1764-75. Architect J.- B. de la Mothe
The Small Hermitage is one of a set of buildings comprising a single whole with the Winter Palace. It
was built with the purpose of housing a fine arts collection.
The facade facing the Neva is notable for the lavishness and refinement of its architectural
forms. It boasts of a monumental six - column portico and decorative sculpture - the statues of Flora
and Pomona, as well as the sculptural group on top of the attic. The Small Hermitage is connected
with the Old Hermitage building by means of a suspension garden, which has been preserved up to
now.
