- Rastrelli Square, 3/1
- 1748-64. Architect B.Rastrelli
- Now the Concert and Exhibition Hall.
-
- The Smolny Convent Cathedral is a brilliant
- sample of Russian architecture of the mid-18th
- century, and one of the best works by Rastrelli.
- This is one of the outstanding achievements in
- world architecture, for its perfect proportions,
- exquisite painting and expressive composition.
- The cathedral tends to dominate the neighboring
- buildings. It can be seen from afar, from
- Shpalernaya Street and Suvorovsky Prospekt; it
- is especially impressive when viewed from the
- opposite Neva bank.Intricate facade design,
- abundant decorative sculpture and stucco
- moulding, clusters of columns at the corners and
- richly ornamented lintels are all typical of
- Baroque architecture. The lower part of the
- cathedral divided into two tiers is topped with the
- high drum of the central dome.It has
- well-proportioned towers of four belfries
- adjoining it. All this make the cathedral soar
- upwards, as it were, producing the impression of
- dynamics and plasticity. The contraposition of
- blue wall, white stucco moulding and the gold of
- the domes makes it look especially picturesque.
