  1. The Spit is a cape in the island's eastern part. In 
  2. the late 17th century there used to be a village 
  3. there. The idea of creating an architectural 
  4. ensemble originated in the early 1710s. 
  5. According to D.Trezzini's project (1716) a 
  6. square was to be laid out there, with dwelling 
  7. houses running along the bank. However, 
  8. foundation of the |Kunstkammer (Chamber of|Custom1|O:80| 
  9. |Curiosities)|Custom1|O:80| marked the site out as the future city 
  10. center. In 1803-4 the architect A.Zakharov 
  11. developed a building project for the spit, that has 
  12. basically been preserved in the layout. The 
  13. emphasis was laid on an artistic effect produced 
  14. by the contrast between the powerful horizontal 
  15. embankment line and the domineering volume of 
  16. the |Stock Exchange|Custom1|O:78|, with its majestic colonnade. 
  17. The vertical |Rostral Columns|Custom1|O:79| emphasize the 
  18. central space of the whole ensemble, taken up 
  19. by the |Stock Exchange.|Custom1|O:78|
