  2. 1761-69. Architect D.Trezzini. Three-tier 
  3. belfry-1783, architect G.Quarenghi; in 1848 the 
  4. architect L.Rusca added the fourth tier. In 1831 
  5. the architect A.Melnikov built a stone vestibule
  6.  
  7. In the 18th century the site of the present church 
  8. got the name of the Dvortsovaya (Palace) 
  9. settlement. Land was allotted here to court 
  10. officials. The church built here played a major 
  11. part in the urban design. Not only does the 
  12. building anchor Zagorodny Prospekt vista and 
  13. represent a dominant point in the whole district 
  14. built up with apartment houses; it has also lead 
  15. to redesigning adjacent areas and gave rise to a 
  16. new square (Vladimirskaya Square).The 
  17. five-dome church designed in Baroque continues 
  18. the traditions laid down by Rastrelli and 
  19. Chevakinsky. Similar to |St.Nicholas Cathedral|Custom1|O:58|, it 
  20. has two stories. The vestibule with staircases 
  21. leading into the second story is a link between 
  22. the main volume and the refectory. It was 
  23. erected in the 19th century and is a typical 
  24. sample of classical architecture.In the upper 
  25. church a carved iconostasis has been preserved, 
  26. which is one of the most interesting samples of 
  27.
