\paperw19995 \margr0\margl0 \plain \fs20 \f1 The Madonna is holding a small red carnation, toward which the Child seated on a cushion on her lap stretches out his hands.

The golden lining of the MadonnaÆs cloak is folded in front creating an elaborate ruffle. Alongside her, a glass vase with a long narrow neck holds a bunch of flowers.\par
In the background, two mullioned windows with two lights are visible, throu
gh which we glimpse a landscape with rocks and trees, represented from an aerial perspective, that fades into bluish tones near the horizon.\par
The windows provide another light source in addition to the light that enters from the front, so that there
is a gradual, delicately-shaded transition from the planes which hold the main figure to the background.\par
The picture, which was painted early in the artistÆs career (around 1473), has a pyramidal structure that is typical of LeonardoÆs work.\par
Th
e solid and sculptural forms of the figures, which were derived from Verrocchio, are accompanied by the use of luministic effects that have a Flemish origin.\par
