  12. Under certain circumstances data compression is useful.

  14. SOLUTION
  15. Data compression is available by purchasing Compression Module daughter
  16. boards from:

  24. You will need one daughter board on the Novell synchronous+ board at each
  25. end of the circuit.

  27. The daughter boards provide on the fly data compression over the entire
  28. range of 9600 to 64K bps.  
  29.  
  30. Testing in Novell's lab has shown the compression to vary from 1:1 to 26:1.
  31. The amount of compression varies with the type of data transmitted.  Most
  32. word processing, spreadsheet, and database files will be compressed
  33. somewhere in a range from 4:1 to 6:1.  Compression rates above 6:1 and as
  34. high as 26:1 have been achieved but only with data that fits a highly
  35. repetitive profile.

  37. NOTE: previously compressed data files will slow down ANY data compression
  38. system because all compression schemes look at section of the file to see
  39. if it can be compressed,if not, the section is passed through
  40. transparently.  However, this takes an additional amount of processing time
  41. (varying with the efficiency of the compression alogirithim).

  43. The Compression Module is designed to work with both Newport's LAN 2 LAN
  44. product and Novell's LINK/64 which is OEMed from Newport.  Both products
  45. are optimized for NetWare.
