NOVELL RELEASES NETWARE FOR UNIX v3.11 TO PARTNERS
What: Novell has released NetWare for Unix v3.11 (formerly Portable
NetWare) to its NetWare for Unix partners. NetWare for Unix is
a source code product that provides NetWare services such as
file, print, communications, and messaging to customers using
general-purpose operating systems like Unix, VMS and MPE.
NetWare for Unix allows customers to extend access from their
business-critical applications running on Unix or other general
purpose operating systems to their desktop PCs.
NetWare for Unix supports Unix, DOS, Windows and OS/2 clients.
Macintosh clients are currently supported through native
NetWare v3.11.
Why: The new features in NetWare for Unix v3.11 will make it easier
for partners to develop networking solutions for their
customers.
New Features: NetWare for Unix v3.11 provides additional features over the
previous version of Portable NetWare, 3.01. These improvements
include:
■ Full compatibility with NetWare v3.11 and NetWare v2.2
■ Support for NetWare Packet Burst technology that
significantly improves wide- and local-area networking
performance on NetWare networks
■ A new NetWare for Unix file system (NWFS) that eases the
process of porting NetWare for Unix to general-purpose
operating systems
■ New rprinter and pserver printer architecture that allows
NetWare for Unix to integrate seamlessly with native
NetWare print services
■ Support for the extended attributes of OS/2 clients
■ New NetWare C Interface for Unix application programming
interfaces (APIs) to support the development of
distributed applications on Unix-based servers
When: NetWare for Unix v3.11 will begin shipping to Novell's NetWare
for Unix partners in February.
